Petty Theft / Resisting an Officer – Suspect Arrested
May 16 at 1:49 a.m., a resident of an apartment complex in the 200 block of W. Pomona reported a suspicious subject in a private parking structure. Officers arrived and located the subject wrapped in a motorcycle cover belonging to one of the residents. The subject was found to have stolen property belonging to a resident's motorcycle. The resident desired prosecution. The subject became noncompliant and walked away from officers. Officers were able to stop him. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 16 at 7:12 a.m., a caller in the 1200 block of S. Mayflower reported several mailboxes were broken into. This investigation is continuing.
Trespassing – Suspects Arrested
May 16 at 7:31 a.m., officers conducted a search of a vacant residence in the 200 block of W. Evergreen. Three subjects were found inside. The property owner desired prosecution. The subjects were arrested and taken into custody.

May 16 at 10:06 a.m., a caller in the 200 block of N. Mountain reported that sometime throughout the night, several items were stolen from his unlocked vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Drug Activity – Suspect Arrested
May 16 at 7:04 p.m., officers were dispatched to a welfare check on a male subject laying on the grass in the area of Lime and Heliotrope. Officers arrived and made contact with the known subject. He was not in need of assistance. He was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 16 at 11:43 p.m., while patrolling the 2100 block of S. Myrtle an officer saw a group of suspicious subjects on bicycles commit vehicle code violations and littering. An investigation revealed the littering was drug paraphernalia. Another subject was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. Both subjects were arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

May 17 at 12:54 a.m., officers patrolling the area of Colorado and Madison were dispatched to a catalytic converter theft in progress. Officers arrived, but the suspects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

May 17 at 1:18 a.m., while patrolling the area of Ivy and Palm officers observed a bicyclist commit a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop. A computer check revealed the subject had an outstanding warrant. The subject was arrest.

May 17 at 8:53 a.m., officers responded to a vacant property in the 200 block of W. Evergreen regarding a male subject inside the property. Officers arrived and located two subjects inside. The property owner was contacted and he desired prosecution. The suspects were arrested and taken into custody.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
May 17 at 5:59 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Almond called to report that her child's father was at the location causing a disturbance. Officers arrived and made contact with the male subject. A computer search revealed he had a warrant for his arrest and wanted for attempted murder in Lancaster. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
May 17 at 9:03 p.m., a business in the 400 block of S. Myrtle called to report an intoxicated subject on the premises. Officers arrived and located the subject. An investigation revealed the subject was too intoxicated to care for herself. She was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
May 17 at 9:25 p.m., while at a separate call for service, officer saw a male subject on the 400 block of S. Myrtle who appeared to be too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.
Homicide
May 17 at 9:21 p.m., Monrovia Police Department Dispatch received a telephone call from a woman saying a male subject, against whom she had a restraining order, was at her home armed with a knife. Officers responded immediately and discovered the male subject deceased with a gunshot wound. The female reporting party was detained at the scene. A firearm was recovered. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Division was notified of the incident and has assumed control of the investigation. No arrests have been made. All further inquiries should be directed to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.

May 18 at 7:05 a.m., a caller stated that his wallet was stolen from inside of his vehicle while parked in the area of Duarte and Encino on May 17. This investigation is continuing.

Structure Fire
May 18 at 12:58 p.m., officers responded to a garage fire in the 400 block of W. Lemon. One of the residents disposed of a cigarette in a trash bin inside of the detached garage. The trash bin caught on fire but was quickly put out with a water hose when officers arrived. No injuries were reported. This investigation is continuing.

May 19 at 8:56 a.m., an employee from a business in the 800 block of S. Mountain called to report a suspicious subject checking door handles on parked vehicles. Officers arrived and contacted the subject. A computer search revealed he had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 19 at 10:04 p.m., a retail store in the 600 block of W. Huntington called to report several subjects who left with merchandise without paying. The subjects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.
Attempt Robbery – Suspect Arrested
May 19 at 11:11 p.m., two victims walked into the MPD lobby to report that they had been assaulted in a parking lot while one of the suspects was trying to take a victim’s property. One of the victims sustained injuries to the head and was treated by MFD. Officers searched the area and located a suspect nearby who was positively identified by one of the victims. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Driving Under the Influence / Traffic Collision – Suspect Arrested
May 20 at 12:19 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of E. Walnut on a report of a traffic collision involving a parked car. Officers arrived and made contact with the driver who displayed symptoms of being under the influence. A DUI investigation revealed she was under the influence. She was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

May 20 at 8:17 a.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the area of Central and Ivy. This investigation is continuing.

May 20 at 10:40 a.m., the caller from a construction site in the 400 block of Genoa reported that over the weekend someone gained access to the site and stole electrical wire and pipes. This investigation is continuing.

May 20 at 11:18 a.m., an employee from a business in the 900 block of S. Primrose reported three company vehicles were broken into and damaged. This investigation is continuing.
Domestic Violence / Felon with a Gun – Suspect Arrested
May 20 at 11:48 a.m., a caller from a hotel in the 900 block of W. Huntington called to report a male and female subject were possibly physically fighting in one of the rooms. Officers arrived and made contact with both subjects. An investigation revealed the male had battered the female. He was arrested and was also found to be an ex-felon in possession of two firearms. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 20 at 2:23 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Canyon Crest called to report a male subject stole his mail. The investigation is continuing.

May 21 at 7:35 a.m., the owner of a business in the 100 block of E. Chestnut discovered someone shattered the glass of the front door. This investigation is continuing.
Injury Traffic Collision
May 21 at 7:42 a.m., officers responded to the area of California and Colorado regarding a traffic collision. An investigation revealed that one of the drivers’ failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the victim. Both drivers complained of pain but refused medical treatment.

May 21 at 3:54 p.m., an officer patrolling the area of Magnolia and Cypress witnessed a vehicle commit a traffic violation. The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver. A computer search revealed the driver had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 21 at 8:59 p.m., an employee of a hardware store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a male adult had just taken merchandise and left the store without paying. Officers arrived and located the male running. He was stopped and found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. The stolen property was returned. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 21 at 11:04 p.m., while patrolling the 200 block of S. Myrtle an officer saw a vehicle driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was located a short distance abandoned. This investigation is continuing.

May 22 at 12:05 a.m., an alarm company for a car dealership in the 1400 block of S. Mountain reported seeing a male subject rummaging through a customer's vehicle. Officers arrived and located the male. He ran from them, but was apprehended without incident. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 22 at 7:37 a.m., a caller in the 300 block of W. Evergreen reported a breaker was stolen from the building. This investigation is continuing.

May 22 at 8:02 a.m., a victim in the 300 block of W. Lemon reported the catalytic converter to her vehicle stolen. This investigation is continuing.
Assault
May 22 at 9:54 a.m., a road rage incident was reported in the area of Magnolia and Huntington. The parties pulled in a parking lot, one of the parties got out and approached the other party who was still in her vehicle. One of the drivers’ knocked the phone out of the others hand. Officers arrived and made contact with both parties. This investigating is continuing.

May 22 at 4:02 p.m., a witness in the 200 block of W. Pomona reported a male and female subject were yelling and the male subject was not allowing the female subject to walk away by forcing her in the vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Had dinner at London Gastro Pub, on the west side of Myrtle just south of Lime. Got the fish and chips for $19 and a beer for happy hour price of. $5. Good. My wife had the same thing and (heresy alert!) said it was better than the fish and chips we had in London.

Joanne Spring, Cofounder of Monrovia Reads, Has Died
The Monrovia Rotary Club reports that Joanne Spring, a cofounder, with Rob Hammond, of Monrovia Reads, has died. The club reports that she "was not only a dear friend of our club but also a pillar of our community and a tireless champion of literacy in Monrovia. Her dedication and passion touched countless lives, and her legacy will continue to inspire us all. Joanne was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Joanne."

Arcadian, an 80-Pound Lap Dog
Arcadian is a big guy with an equally big heart. He’s an 80 pound lap-dog in the shape of a Shepherd mix.
Arcadian has been out with the Pasadena Humane Mobile Outreach team and they have nothing but wonderful things to say about him. He’s super friendly, easy to train and walks right next to you on a walk. He’s very quick to make friends with everyone who he meets.
He will often place a gentle paw on your lap to prod you to give him some pets, then replace that with his head, then the rest of his body if you allow it. He just wants to be close to you!
Arcadian also appears to be friendly with dogs- he has met a few at the shelter and seems to want to play with them. He might be a great buddy for another large dog.
If you’re ready for all the love you can handle, you might be ready for Arcadian!
The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. For those who prefer, adoption appointments are available daily from 10:30 – 1:30, and can be scheduled online. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Young Monrovia Volleyball Coach Overcomes Challenges
Eighteen-year-old Monrovia volleyball coach, Shalini Caldera, balances an impressive array of responsibilities.
This past semester, she maintained a 4.0 GPA while coaching two volleyball teams -- a 14-year-old girls team and the Monrovia High School JV Boys -- and playing collegiate volleyball at Citrus College. Shalini, born and raised in nearby Arcadia, began working at Monrovia High School in September as the JV Boys Volleyball head coach.
Her coaching journey has had its challenges. Early in the season, a male referee questioned her ability to coach, even calling a timeout on her behalf because he thought she "looked confused." Her team won that game in two sets without using any timeouts.
In a later tournament, another referee repeatedly referred to her as a "little girl," despite her introducing herself as "Coach Shalini." Despite these interactions, she led her team to third place out of sixteen teams, earning a trophy.
Her team finished the season with nineteen wins and four losses and she believes her perspective as a young female coach contributed to her success as she brings a different perspective to the boys volleyball program.
She found it difficult to fit into an occupation almost entirely composed of men, and sometimes felt overlooked, however she decided the only way to establish herself was to ignore the jokes and let her coaching speak for itself.
Shalini's coaching philosophy focuses on developing each athlete both on and off the court. Her goal this season was to positively affect her players' lives through volleyball. While she values the season's success, she places greater importance on the lessons learned and memories made with her team.
Though she faced judgment and ridicule, Shalini found support from her players and credits the Monrovia Boys Volleyball program and her parents for their support. She hopes to inspire young girls to step into roles where women are underrepresented, encouraging the next generation to push back boundaries.

Convert Monroe School May Become Spanish Dual-Immersion; Wild Rose to English Only; Completely New High School Graduation Requirements
~ Consider a proposal to convert Monroe Elementary to a Spanish dual immersion-only school and Wild Rose School of Creative Arts to an English-only arts school beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.
~ Apparently consider replacing traditional high school graduation requirements with alternatives.
The content of this document, labeled "High School Graduation Requirements," has been revised by completely crossing out everything except for a form for veterans and Japanese American citizens to receive a diploma.
Instead, there are two new documents, here and here, that give alternatives to gaining credits for graduation, specifically: a practical demonstration of skills, taking courses offered by regional occupational centers, independent study, work experience, private instruction, college correspondence courses, and military service.

Council to Discuss Tsuneishi Park, Honor Older Monrovian Barbara Rigby-Elson

Neighbor Treasure Block Party for Pat Ostrye
Monrovia's ninth Neighborhood Treasure, Pat Ostrye, will be honored on Saturday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 300 N Alta Vista. Mary "Pat" Ostrye was the first woman elected to the Monrovia City Council and the city's first elected mayor. Her achievements include establishing Monrovia Meals-on-Wheels, Dial-a-Ride, a home library, and a federally funded senior lunch program. She later served as city clerk and city treasurer. May 9 at 2:01 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 400 block of Linwood and located a suspicious parked vehicle occupied by two subjects and made contact with the subjects. A search revealed the driver was in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 9 at 9:49 a.m., a caller in the 3200 block of S. Peck reported a commercial burglary. The suspect posed as a contractor and picked up a purchase order intended for another company. This investigation is continuing.

May 9 at 3:18 p.m., an employee from a business in the 300 block of W. Huntington called to report a robbery. The caller stated that a subject took merchandise and when an employee approached the subject, the subject pushed the employee to the ground and fled. Officers located a subject matching the description, a field show up confirmed the subject was the suspect. He was arrested and taken into custody.

May 9 at 7:24 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of W. Palm on a report of an argument between a male and female subject. Officers arrived, located and made contact with the subjects. An investigation revealed that the male subject was too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
May 10 at 4:47 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Longden and Myrtle for a traffic violation. Upon contacting the driver, the officer observed a controlled substance inside the vehicle. The driver was arrested and taken into custody.

May 10 at 6:07 p.m., officers responded to the area of Chestnut and Primrose regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Fraud – Suspect Arrested
May 10 at 7:21 p.m., fraud was reported in a hotel in the 900 block of S. Fifth. Officers arrived and determined that a female subject fraudulently used a credit card not belonging to her to pay for a room. The female subject was located a short distance away in a vehicle. Officers conducted a traffic stop and determined that she was in violation of credit card fraud. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

May 10 at 8:22 p.m., a residential fire was reported in the 600 block of W. Foothill. Officers arrived to assist MFD with evacuating the residence and crowd control. This investigation is continuing.

May 10 at 11:30 p.m., a fight was reported in the 100 block of Mauna Loa. Officers arrived and determined two roommates were upset about a fire that occurred earlier in the day and were involved in a physical altercation. This investigation is continuing.

May 13 at 1:44 p.m., a solo traffic collision was reported in the area of Royal Oaks and Mountain. The driver suffered a medical emergency and went up and over the sidewalk, into a brick wall and came to a stop in the front yard of a residence. Nobody was injured as a result and the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Trespass / Assault on Police Officer – Suspect Arrested
May 13 at 2:47 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of W. Evergreen regarding multiple subjects trespassing. Officers arrived and were aggressively approached by a male subject who was refusing to comply with the officers’ requests. Officers attempted different methods of de-escalation and the subject refused to comply. He was eventually arrested and taken into custody.
Trespassing
May 13 at 10:32 p.m., an alarm activation was reported in the 100 block of W. Lime. Officers arrived and found an unlocked door. A search revealed several people were inside the building trespassing. The property management refused to prosecute and only wanted the subjects to leave.
Urinate in Public – Suspect Arrested
May 14 at 10:13 a.m., a caller in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported a male urinating in public. Officers arrived and contacted a subject matching the description. The caller positively identified the subject and desired prosecution. The subject refused to give officers his name. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Weapon Offense Myrtle – Suspect Arrested
May 14 at 12:11 p.m., while patrolling the area of Myrtle and California an officer saw a vehicle in violation of a vehicle code. When contacting the driver the officer saw a baton next to the driver. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Shoplifting – Suspects Arrested
May 14 at 9:36 p.m., an employee of a store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a female suspect ran out of the store with power tools without paying. Officers responded and located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. A field show-up confirmed she was the suspect. The stolen property was returned to the store. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Vehicle Burglary
May 15 at 7:54 a.m., a victim in the 400 block of Norumbega called to report his vehicle was broken into sometime during the evening. This investigation is continuing.
Fraud
May 15 at 11:16 a.m., a resident walked into the MPD lobby to report that his bank account showed fraudulent activity. This investigation is continuing.
Grand Theft Auto
May 15 at 4:11 p.m., a victim in the 1600 block of S. Mountain walked out of a store and realized that her vehicle had been stolen. This investigation is continuing.
Hit and Run Traffic Collision
May 15 at 4:47 p.m., a resident in the in the 500 block of S. Mayflower reported that his vehicle was hit while parked on the street and the driver did not stop. This investigation is continuing.
Warrant Arrest
May 15 at 5:03 p.m., a caller in the 600 block of W. Foothill reported that a female subject restrained from the location was there. Officers arrived and could not find any evidence of a restraining order. A computer search revealed she had a warrant for her arrest. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Drug Paraphernalia / Pursuit
May 15 at 9:09 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of W. Cherry regarding people yelling outside. The caller reported two vehicles in the middle of the street with several occupants in the vehicles yelling at each other. One of the vehicles shot at the occupants of the other vehicle. Officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Two suspects fled and one of the occupants stayed in the vehicle. She was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested and taken into custody. This investigation is continuing.
Grand Theft
May 15 at 9:33 p.m., a guest of a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington reported someone had entered her unlocked vehicle sometime during the day and took items. This investigation is continuing.
Health Fair at Foothill Unity Center May 18
Monrovia’s Foothill Unity Center will hold its annual Health & Resource Fair on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 790 W Chestnut Avenue. Monrovia Days Starts Tomorrow Evening
Tomorrow night Monrovia will begin celebrating its 138th anniversary. Monrovia Days Parade on Myrtle on May 16 at 7 p.m. Then, on May 17-19, there will be a variety of events at Library Park, including a book sale, carnival rides, live shows, and a pie eating contest.
