Council to Discuss Budget, Inclusionary Housing

At its next meeting (agenda here) the Monrovia City Council will ...

~ Consider proclaiming September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month  and  September 8-14 as  National Suicide Prevention Week.

~ The Council will also hold a study session to get an update on its 2024-25 budget, and to discuss "inclusionary housing," a type of program designed to provide housing for lower income families, often by requiring developers to set aside a percentage of a development's housing units for lower-income residents. 1. Inclusioary housing will simply shift prices upward to those who can afford it, which is unlikely to help bring productive people to Monrovia. The City Council, if it wanted to show "compassion", should review impediments to building new housing so that it can be less expensive. This might mean giving up some of the "cherished" old housing (which is meant to stop the future and pretend Monrovia is immune to time) to new development, streamlining permitting and requiring less red tape and environmental restrictions which RAISE the cost to build new housing. The rising costs are driving insurers out of the CA market, which leads to more homeowners going the insurer of last resort, CalFair (Orwell was right).

My own home became unisurable (I found out when I sold it) when suddenly and without notice, a change in the fire zone to a block south of me put me in a fire hazard zone. Who did that? Why? I dunno if it was the city or CA or the insurance companies. My property was declared virtually uninsurable by unknown actors without the courtesy of notification to me. The buyer was in a panic (which I completely understand) as I was. We got lucky, he found insurance, and the sale was completed.

The Council needs to start acting as stewards of other people's money and welfare (OPAW) , instead of trying to pose as "woke" and "compasionate" with OPAW. Since CalFair is almost broke, maybe they should volunteer their money and cancel their less expensive home insurance and sign up with CalFair.

Let the posuers pay for their virtue signaling.
