Happy 'Noon' Year's Eve Monrovia

Apparently there will be no official New Year's Eve party along Myrtle this year - at least I can find no mention of it on the city website or the Old Town website.

There will, however, be a "Noon Years Eve" celebration with activities for families in Library Park, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For adults, I find that The Pour House (405 S Myrtle) will hold a New Year's Eve party beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets required. Details here. Are there others?

Extra Monrovia Cops to Check for Impaired Drivers Through New Year’s Day

The holiday season can be a dangerous time for people on the roads. In December 2021 alone, 1,013 people were killed in the U.S. in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Monrovia Police Department wants to remind the public of the dangers of driving impaired and celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence.

From Dec. 13 through New Year's Day, Monrovia Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The high-visibility enforcement effort is part of a national campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, with the goal of stopping suspected impaired drivers who put others on the road at risk.

"Impaired driving isn't just dangerous, it's illegal," Lt. Chad Harvey said. "Let's make this a joyful and safe holiday season for everyone on the road. This enforcement period allows us to get the message out that it is essential to act responsibly and plan a sober ride home."

Monrovia Police Department encourages everyone to stay in for the night or have a "go safely" game plan by scheduling a ride or designating a sober driver if you plan to consume alcohol.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Marijuana, prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also impair. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect your driving ability.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Merry Christmas, Monrovia!

Manger scene at First Presbyterian Church, Myrtle and Foothill.

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. (Luke 2:16-17)

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

Affectionate Alesana Has a Non-Stop Tail

This pint-sized pup is adorable Alesana, a one-year-old Staffordshire terrier mix.

Alesana is incredibly affectionate. She loves sitting by your side to get pets and give you gentle kisses. Her tail wags non-stop, especially when she gets some scratches or pets.

She has lived with other dogs and would probably do best with dogs her own size or larger. She’s very playful, but she doesn’t know her own size!

Alesana has working on her training cues and is very good at “sit”. Her fetching game needs a little work- she likes the idea of chasing a ball, but immediately returns to the person trying to play because getting pets is much easier, and more fun!

She is the perfect size to go for a hike with you on a trip to the beach. She won’t take up a lot of room in the car or on the couch for a cuddle when you’re back home!

Alesana and all other dogs can be adopted at no cost during the Roses and Wet Noses promotion going on at Pasadena Humane from 12/15 - 12/31. The promotion is sponsored by Pet Care Foundation, and hopes to highlight some of the amazing large dogs who are in need of adoption. Alesana would love to cuddle up with you on the couch and watch the Rose Parade in a couple weeks!

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

View photos of adoptable pets and schedule an adoption appointment at pasadenahumane.org. Adoptions are by appointment only, and new adoption appointments are available every Sunday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Letter from Interim School Superintendent Flint Fertig:

With a heavy heart, I share the news of the passing of a beloved member of our community, Mr. Terrence Williams. As we come together to mourn his loss, we reflect on his indelible mark on our School District and the broader Monrovia community.

Terrence dedicated his time and passion to our School Board, serving diligently from 2013 to 2018. His commitment extended beyond the boardroom, as he actively participated in numerous organizations such as the Monrovia Kiwanis Club, Monrovia Arcadia Duarte (MAD) Town Council, Monrovia Community Coordinating Council, and PTSA.

Mr. Williams also served as the chair of the Measure MM Committee, was the co-chair of Monrovia Unified School District’s Equity and Inclusion Committee, and he was a strong advocate for special education students. His impact reached far and wide, leaving an enduring legacy of service and dedication.

In addition to his civic contributions, Terrence was a cherished community member. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife, Bobbie Williams, and his four children, who all attended Monrovia Schools.

Terrence's presence will be deeply missed, but his contributions to our community will always be remembered. As a close-knit school district family, let us support one another during this challenging time.

Plans to Move Historic Anderson House on Hold

Monrovia's historic Anderson House will stay where it is. The home, which the Historical Society and city were considering moving next door to the Monrovia Historical Museum in Recreation Park, won't be moved any time in the near future, according to Historical Society President Sandy Burud.

She said an analysis revealed that moving it would mean cutting it into two parts so it could fit below the trees on the way to the park, which would cause a lot of damage to the house (dislodging plaster, etc.) and trigger regulations that would require much new work on the structure. And that would  "defeat the purpose of preserving the historically pristine structure."

Carefree Harmony - A 60-Pound Bowling Ball

Two-year-old Harmony is an adorable low-rider who will bowl her way into your heart. Or your legs, if you’re not paying attention!

This 60-pound bowling ball seems to move through life without a care in the world. When she gets “the zoomies” and runs around the yard at Pasadena Humane, she has the appearance of a mini tornado- one that is laughing with a beaming smile the whole time.

When she finally slows down for a minute, Harmony adores getting a nice belly rub as she rolls around in the grass. She kicks her legs in the air like it’s the best thing ever.

Harmony has lived with other dogs, so she might like a friend with similar size and energy level. She’s also quite content to be the only apple of your eye!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

With Treats It Shouldn't Take Tina Too Long too Long to Get Over Her Shyness

Tina is a sweet girl with a big heart! This two-year-old black lab mix can be a little shy with new people at first but give her some delicious treats and she’ll be coming up to you to say hello (and get some more snacks). She even enjoyed cuddling in bed with her foster parent!

Tina’s love of food means she really enjoys learning new things in exchange for treats. She has a hunger for knowledge (and hot dogs) that could make her top of the class in any training session!

Tina is an active girl who enjoys playing fetch and chasing after toys. She’s often seen having the zoomies in the Pasadena Humane play yard and rolling around on her back. However, she always takes a break for snuggles with her favorite people.

This gentle pup is seeking a patient adopter who can give her a little time to come out of her shell. Tina would prefer to be the only pet in the home so she can get all your affection (and as much room as possible on the bed).

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
