Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Saturday

Monrovia Public Library will host a celebration of Hispanic heritage from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, at Library Park. There will be a variety of activities including a folclórico dance, performance tile painting, paper bag painting, making worry dolls, a Guatemalan tradition where tiny handmade dolls given to children to share their worries with and then hide under their pillow before going to sleep at night.  More about Hispanic heritage in Monrovia here.

VFW BBQ Oct. 14

Monrovia's VFW Post 2070 will host a BBQ at its hall in Monrovia (Chestnut and Magnolia) on Saturday, October 14, at 3 p.m. Food and raffles. To reserve a plate, purchase a $20 donation ticket by calling the VFW at 359-9998 directly or Floyd at 660-6823.

Art in the Park Saturday, Oct. 7: Displays by 50 Fine Artists, Chalk Artists, Music and Children's Activities

The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) will host the 61st Annual Art in the Park Show and Chalkfest on October 7 at Library Park. The event will showcase over 50 fine artists from Southern California, including both adults and students, along with 11 prize-winning chalk artists. There will be a diverse range of art forms, including paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, digital arts, pottery, woodworking, and chalk art. A silent auction will support MAFA's art education initiatives, and the event will feature live music, food trucks, kids' art activities. Admission is free.

Halloween Spooktacular Oct. 31 in Library Park and Old Town

 

The 2023 Halloween Spooktacular & Trick-or-Treat Bash is set for Tuesday, October 31, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Old Town Monrovia and Library Park. Activities include trick-or-treating in Old Town, costume contests for various categories, library activities, activity booths, and a photo booth. Registration for the costume contest, taking place in Library Park, begins at 3 p.m. and is free of charge.

Council Will Consider Bigger Christmas Tree In Library Park; More Money for Canyon Park; Etc.

At its next meeting (agenda here) the Monrovia City Council will consider ...

~ Selecting a bigger tree in Library Park as the city's Christmas tree, and improve the tree lighting along Myrtle in Old Town. "Staff is recommending an alternative tree in Library Park to be lit and identified as the official Holiday Tree. The existing Deodar Cedar tree stretches 80-feet in the air and would be lit with well over 10,000 lights. In addition, a 4-foot tall starburst would top the tree and could be seen from blocks away. This new Holiday Tree would create a destination spot for visitors throughout the region to come to Old Town Monrovia for a holiday get together while taking in the holiday charm throughout Old Town and stopping to enjoy the festive Holiday Tree in Library Park." However, the existing tree will continue to be lit. The Council will consider hiring Innovative Light Designs to make it happen. Details.

~ Committing an additional $709,293 (and a contingency amount of $70,000) for restoration of Monrovia Canyon Park. The money would pay Pokrajac Corporation for construction and Merrell-Johnson Engineering for management. The work would be to repair a messed up trail section on the Bill Cull Trail, for the removal of debris, boulders, brush and dead trees at Check Dams 2 and 3, and to fortify sloped areas around Check Dams 1, 2 and 3. ~ Consolidating its municipal election to be on the same day as the statewide primary election, March 5, 2024. Details.

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 325 service events, resulting in 60 investigations. 

Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
September 21 at 2:25 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 1600 block S. Myrtle, when she located a male subject who appeared to need assistance walking. When she contacted the subject, she discovered he was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Petty Theft
September 21 at 09:35 a.m., a mother came into the police station to report her sons backpack was stolen the day before between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. He had placed his backpack in the locker room while he went to football practice. When he returned, the backpack was missing. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
September 21 at 12:09 p.m., a victim in the 400 block of Linwood reported that the catalytic converters from two of vehicles were stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Injury Traffic Accident
September 21 at 1:11 p.m., an injury traffic collision was reported in the area of Mountain and Evergreen. The parties were treated at the scene by MFD.

Overdose
September 21 at 3:12 p.m., caller reported a male subject in the 900 block of W. Duarte was sleeping on the ground and he was not waking up. Officers arrived and determined the subject was overdosing on narcotics. Officers administered narcan and the male subject was revived. Paramedics arrived and he was transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Runaway Juvenile
September 21 at 3:15 p.m., a female juvenile was reported as a runaway from the 100 block of N. Ivy. This investigation is continuing.

Assault / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
September 22 at 6:45 a.m., a victim in the 600 block of W. Huntington reported a female subject threw coffee at her. Officers arrived and located the female subject. The victim positively identified the female subject, but did not desire prosecution. A computer check revealed the female subject was in violation of parole. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Vehicle Theft
September 22 at 8:15 a.m., a vehicle theft was reported in a parking lot in the 300 block of E. Foothill. The victim parked her vehicle and when she returned she realized her vehicle had been broken into and property was taken. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
September 22 at 10:42 a.m., a victim walked into the MPD lobby to report that the catalytic converter from their vehicle was stolen while parked in the 500 block of Bradbury. This investigation is continuing.

Theft – Suspect Arrested
September 22 at 2:53 p.m., a caller in the 700 block of E. Huntington reported that a male subject walked into a business, took an item, and left without paying. Officers arrived and located the male subject and recovered the stolen item. The caller positively identified the suspect. He was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Fraud
September 22 at 3:53 p.m., a victim walked into the MPD lobby to report that he had been scammed. This investigation is continuing.

Vehicle Burglary
September 22 at 4:46 p.m., a victim reported that he parked his vehicle in the 100 block of W. Huntington. When he returned to his vehicle, his window was shattered and property was missing. This investigation is continuing.

Wanted Person – Suspect Arrested
September 22 at 7:35 p.m., an officer working on a DUI patrol conducted a traffic stop in the area of Myrtle and Longden. A computer check revealed that the driver was a wanted fugitive. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Attempt Vehicle Burglary
September 22 at 9:52 p.m., a resident in the 300 block of S. Primrose called to report suspicious subjects who looked like they were breaking into vehicles. Offices arrived and confirmed that a crime had occurred. The suspects were gone prior to officer’s arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
September 22 at 11:47 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of W. Foothill regarding a possible drunk driver who exited his vehicle stumbling. Officers arrived and located the driver. A DUI investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Attempted Grand Theft Auto
September 22 at 10:55 p.m., a caller in the area of Monterey and Chestnut called to report a group of juveniles attempting to steal a vehicle. The suspects were gone prior to officers’ arrival.

Attempted Grand Theft Auto – Suspect Arrested
September 23 at 12:07 a.m., a new reporting party called to report the same juveniles from the previous call, had returned to the same vehicle and were once again attempting to steal it. Officers arrived and officers gave pursuit, eventually detaining four juvenile suspects. The juvenile suspects were positively identified by the caller. Three juvenile suspects were released to parents with citations. A records check of the fourth juvenile suspect revealed he was on probation for vehicle theft and was taken into custody.

Attempt Petty Theft
September 24 at 8:21 p.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report a male and female subject were attempting to conceal store items in their clothing. Officers arrived and spoke with store management, who requested officers contact the subjects and ask them to leave. Officers contacted the two inside the store. The items were returned to the store and were issued a no trespassing notice. This investigation is continuing.

Commercial Burglary
September 25 at 2:50 a.m., officers responded to a business burglary alarm in the 300 block of Huntington. The officer arrived and saw the front glass doors were forced open. While searching the inside, officers saw the steel office door had been forced open. This investigation is continuing.

Overdose / Death Report
September 25 at 6:39 a.m., a parent in the 300 block of E. Palm reported that their daughter overdosed and was unresponsive. MPD and MFD responded and deployed lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, the subject had been deceased for a few hours. The coroner's office was notified.

Stolen License Plate
September 25 at 10:19 a.m., a caller in the 1400 block of Alamitas reported her license plate was stolen from her vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Fraud
September 25 at 12:11 p.m., a resident in the 300 block of W. Huntington reported his credit cards were stolen from his mailbox and were being fraudulently used. This investigation is continuing.

Stolen License Plate
September 25 at 1:52 p.m., a caller in the 1400 block of Monterey reported their license plate was stolen from their vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Mail Theft / Vandalism
September 25 at 2:41 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of W. Duarte reported their community mailbox was pried open and mail was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Injury Traffic Collision
September 25 at 4:20 p.m., a three vehicle traffic collision was reported in the area of Mountain and Royal Oaks. One party complained of pain and was treated at the scene by MFD.

Battery on Officer Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 25 at 9:37 p.m., a passerby witnessed an adult female subject setting debris on fire in the area of Myrtle and California. Officers arrived and contacted the subject, who was next to burnt trash. When an officer attempted to search the female, she abruptly punched him on the face, causing him an injury. The suspect was positively identified by the witness. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Vandalism
September 26 at 2:59 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Fano reported someone had broken her vehicle's fuel door. This investigation is continuing.

Shoplifting
September 26 at 3:29 p.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported male and female subjects stole merchandise. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects. This investigation is continuing.

Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested
September 26 at 7:07 p.m., a caller from a business 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a female adult left the store with merchandise she did not pay for. Officers responded and located the female. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the store. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Petty Theft
September 27 at 7:34 a.m., a victim in the 500 block of W. Duarte reported sometime overnight, his vehicle (left unlocked) was ransacked and property was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Fraud
September 27 at 4:20 p.m., an employee from a hotel in the 900 block of W. Huntington reported that a suspect used a fraudulent credit card to rent a room. Officers arrived but were unable to locate the suspect. This investigation is continuing.

Drug Activity
September 27 at 5:09 p.m., a caller in the 100 block of W. Palm reported subjects possibly using drugs in a parking lot. Officers arrived and located the subject. It was determined one of the subjects was in possession of drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested, cited and released at the scene.

Grand Theft
September 27 at 5:54 p.m., a business owner in the 900 block of S. Myrtle reported his money bag was stolen from his office. This investigation is continuing.

Dinner at Chipotle, on the south side of Huntington Drive in the Huntington Oaks Shopping Center. Got a “bowl” with carnitas for $10:30, plus $2.85 for guacamole, and a soft drink for $2.92. It was delicious!

Shadow Likes Eveybody - Handsome Too!

Shadow is not only super handsome, he's also such a good boy! He is an energetic and outgoing lab mix who is about 3 years old.  

Shadow has become quite a favorite of the volunteers at Pasadena Humane. He’s gone on some field trips and even had an overnight stay with a foster family. He has spent time with other dogs and kids- he seems to like everyone he meets! 

He also appears to be housetrained, and he knows some tricks. He’ll happily sit or give you a paw for a treat. He loves treats, so additional training will be a breeze! 

Shadow definitely wants to be someone’s shadow. He follows you around with a happy grin on his face until you acknowledge his presence and remind him that he’s a good boy.  

Shadow is ready for his forever home- maybe with you? 

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.  

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

620 S Myrtle, which became the Gem City Barber shop, Henry Kirkenschlager, proprietor. "Nearly five years ago Henry Kirkenschlager came to Monrovia from Kansas, to join the large colony here from that state. Shortly after arrival he opened a first-class tonsorial parlor and bath-rooms, and ever since has been enjoying a most liberal patronage. Kirk's tonsorial parlor is at the corner of Lemon and Myrtle avenues. He also has bath rooms in connection with his shop, and in addition conducts the agency of the Anchor Laundry of Los Angeles." Teen Drop-In Do-It-Yourself Event at Library on Wednesday

Fine Arts Group Posts Preview of Artists Displaying Their Work at 'Art in the Park' on Oct. 7

The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts has released a preview page (here) showing the work of 40 artists who will be displaying their work at the 2023 Art in the Park on Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Library Park. At the same time there will be a chalkfest, featuring chalk pictures drawn on the sidewalks throughout the day, plus live music, food trucks, and activities for children.

Wild Rose's Alison Meloserdoff Named One of LA County Teachers of the Year

Alison Meloserdoff, a teacher at Monrovia's Wild Rose School of Creative Arts, has been named one of the 2023-24 LA County Teachers of the Year by the LA County Office of Education for her dedication to education and innovative teaching methods. She advances to represent Los Angeles County in the upcoming California Teachers of the Year competition.

Five New Eagle Scouts Honored at Scout Ceremony

On September 11 of this year, five Boy Scouts from Troop 66 were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony at Look Cinema, and each received from Mayor Becky Shevlin the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their dedication and community service. The five honorees were Willem Robert Aponno, Guillermo "Memo" Cordoba, Gabriel Nikolas Fierro, Degas Miguel Peters, and James Rangel Vierra. Each of these scouts performed a major community project.

Aponno helped expand the genealogical database of the Billion Graves Project by more than 15,000 genealogical records.

Cordoba completely rebuild benches at St. Anthony Parish Church.

Fierro's  Project Flagbearer focuses on educating the community about flag etiquette and retirement procedures.

Peters' project was building community cat shelters for cats to be placed after trap, neuter, and release.

Vierra rehabilitated the Veteran’s Memorial in Monrovia Canyon Park.

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 346 service events, resulting in 56 investigations.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
September 14 at 12:14 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Primrose and Olive when she saw a motorist commit several traffic violations. A traffic stop was conducted and when the officer approached the vehicle, the officer suspected that the driver was under the influence of a controlled substance. A field investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Grand Theft Auto Recovered
September 14 at 3:37 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of E. Lemon was inside his house when he heard his truck outside starting. He went out and saw someone had just stolen his vehicle. Officers saw the truck traveling at a high rate of speed. They attempted to catch up to the stolen truck, but were unsuccessful. It was last seen passing Clark in the city of El Monte. The El Monte Police Department was notified, and they located the truck unoccupied. This investigation is continuing.

Trespassing – Suspect Arrested
September 14 at 6:11 p.m., a resident in the 1800 block of S. Tenth called to report that his ex-boyfriend was at his property and he wanted the subject to leave. Officers spoke with the subject and the subject left. Several hours later the subject returned, despite the trespass warning. Officers arrived, arrested and took the subject into custody.

Wanted Person / Drug Offenses – Suspect Arrested
September 14 at 7:58 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 1600 block of S. Myrtle when she saw a subject she recognized from prior contacts. She had knowledge that the subject was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. The officer detained the subject and a computer search confirmed that he was a wanted person. He was arrested and taken into custody.

September 15 at 9:17 a.m., a victim in the 1300 block of S. Alta Vista called to report that someone went into her unlocked vehicle during the night and stole jewelry, shoes, and bags. This investigation is continuing.

September 15 at 9:21 a.m., a resident in the 1100 block of Sesmas reported that he parked his vehicle on the street and when he came out the next morning his vehicle was gone. This investigation is continuing.

September 16 at 11:00 a.m., a victim in a gas station in the 1500 block of S. Myrtle called to report that when he walked into the gas station someone went into his vehicle and took money.

September 15 at 11:01 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Royal Oaks called to report that his work truck had been stolen from the street. This investigation is continuing.

Domestic Battery
September 17 at 6:39 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Fano called to report hearing what sounded like a domestic dispute in the adjacent apartment complex. Officers arrived located a female victim who stated that her boyfriend had battered her. He was gone by the time officers arrived. This investigation is continuing.

Public Intoxication
September 17 at 7:40 p.m., a call was received of a person unconscious in a park in the 300 block of S. Myrtle Ave. Officers responded and located a person who was so intoxicated he presented a danger to himself. He was arrested, housed for sobering, and later released on citation.

Grand Theft Auto
September 18 at 2:25 a.m., a victim in the 300 block of E. Olive called to report that a group of unknown suspects had just stolen his motorcycle off the street. Officers arrived, but the suspects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
September 19 at 7:15 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Montana reported a male adult who appeared to be heavily intoxicated. Officers arrived and located the subject. He was found to be too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Public Intoxication
September 19 at 8:25 p.m., a resident in the 1500 block of Encino reported hearing a female outside yelling profanities. Officers arrived and located the female adult. She was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for her own safety. No one was around who could care for her, so she was arrested. After sobering she was released and waited in our lobby for an Uber. She did not know how she ended up in Monrovia, but she thought she may have left her car at BJ's in Arcadia and walked to Monrovia.

Fight
September 19 at 9:32 p.m., employees from a bar in the 100 block of E. Olive reported a male subject fighting with another male and chairs were being thrown. The suspect fled prior to officers arriving and could not be located. Prior to leaving it was discovered he hit a female patron with a chair over her head, but she refused medical attention. This investigation is continuing.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 19 at 9:39 p.m., a caller reported seeing a suspicious male adult loitering in front of a building in the 800 block of E. Olive. Officers arrived and located the male who was found to be sleeping in front of the front doors of the building. He was contacted and a computer check revealed he had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

September 20 at 5:31 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of S. Heliotrope reported the catalytic converter from his vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Flint Fertig Reportedly Interim Monrovia Schools Superintendent

On her Monrovia Messenger Facebook page, Gayle Montgomery says that "two knowledgeable sources" have told her that Flint Fertig has been named as interim Superintendent of Monrovia School District, replacing Ryan D. Smith. The district website, however, still lists Smith as superintendent. 

Fertig is in charge of Alternative Education, including Canyon Oaks High School, Mountain Park School, and Monrovia Community Adult School.

Mike the Beaming Boxer - Like a Kid in a Candy Store

Who can resist Mike's smile?! Not us! This four-year-old boxer beams from ear to ear whenever he gets visitors, and his tail wags non-stop when he gets pets.

Mike was so shy when he first arrived at the shelter that he would even hide in the back of his kennel. Now we're getting to see his true personality, and he is FUN. He loves going to the training yard and exploring. He adores toys and games and bounces from one toy to another like a kid in a candy store. All traces of shyness seem to be behind him, and his bubbly personality is on full display.

He also is quite cuddly when he settles down. He curls up close for pets and will put his big head in your lap for more. Mike is also very clever- he loves to show off all his tricks whenever he sees a treat.

Mike is just so excited to meet everyone he can't help but smile!

Children's Innovation Lab at Library Wednesday

Monrovia Public Library will host Innovation Lab on Sept 20, this Wednesday, from 4-5 p.m. in the Story Room, for children from 6 to 11 years old. It will feature a STEAM-related activity. School Board May Appoint Interim Superintendent

The Monrovia School Board will meet in special closed session Wednesday Monday with just two items on its agenda: 

1. Public Employee Discipline/Dismissal/Release 
2. Appointment - Interim Superintendent

Although the individual referred to in item 1 is not specified, Superintendent Ryan Smith has been criticized on social media lately and his performance was recently evaluated by the school board. Also, the need to appoint an interim superintendent suggests that the current superintendent may not be in charge for much longer.

There will be an opportunity for public comment before the closed session, and a report on any action taken during the closed session when the board reconvenes in public. Details.

High School Student Fixes Up Ranger Station; Meeting About New Park; Cornhole Competition; Plant Native Plants; Book Drive for Prisoners; Beer, Wine, Music; Golden Plate Awards

~ High school student and eagle scout, Stefin Bank, and Boy Scout Troop 66 of Monrovia, raised funds to renovate the Ranger Station at Monrovia Canyon Park. The project was completed on September 3, 2013. The video above tells the story.

~ The Monrovia Community Services Department will hold a meeting on Saturday, October 7 at 10 a.m. at the new park location (1111 Encino Ave). There will be an overview of the park and information about how to submit a park name or theme. Recommend a name for the park here by Sept. 28.

~ The Kiwanis Club of Monrovia will hold its 3rd Annual Kiwanis Cornhole Competition this Saturday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 8:00 p.m. at 212 W. Foothill Blvd. Details.

GoFundMe Page Set Up for Boy Who Died in Fiery Car Crash

A GoFundMe page (here) has been set up for Yariel Reneau, the boy who recently died in the fiery car crash on Duarte Road. The page describes him as a "happy, and energetic young boy who loved riding his bicycle and skateboard. He was going to turn 12 years old this Wednesday, September 13th." At this writing, the goal of $12,000 has been far exceeded, with $16,891 raised.

Vandalism
September 7 at 7:19 a.m., a caller in the 100 block of Los Angeles called to report graffiti in an alleyway. Graffiti removal was notified. This investigation is continuing.

Fraud
September 7 at 10:22 a.m., a victim in the 200 block of S. Ivy called to report a check he placed in the mail was stolen and deposited into a different person's account. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
September 7 at 1:58 p.m., a resident in the 1300 block of S. Myrtle called to report the tailgate from his vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
September 7 at 3:02 p.m., a victim and her husband were walking in the 200 block of W. Scenic when they were approached by two suspects asking for directions. At some point, the suspects switched out a piece of jewelry with the victim and left. The victim did not notice until later. This investigation is continuing.

Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested
September 7 at 3:58 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain regarding a suspect stolen drill. Officers arrived and detained the suspect nearby. The stolen property was recovered. The suspect was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Theft
September 7 at 4:04 p.m., a victim in the 700 block of Ridgeside reported that a headlight from their vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Drug Activity – Suspect Arrested
September 8 at 1:58 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 300 block of E. Foothill when he saw a male adult on a bicycle commit a traffic code violation. He stopped the bicyclist and found that the bicyclist was in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Fight in Progress
September 8 at 6:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to a park in the 300 block of S. Myrtle regarding two female juveniles fighting. When officers arrived the involved females and other juvenile subjects fled the scene. No victims were located during the investigation. This investigation is continuing.

Injury Collision / Fire
September 8 at 7:35 p.m., a vehicle collision where the vehicle was on fire after colliding with parked cars and a tree. The burn victims were transported to the hospital for treatment. The Arcadia PD Major Accident Investigation Team responded to assist with the investigation. One of the occupant passed at the hospital.

Domestic Battery / Robbery
September 8 at 11:16 p.m., a guest of a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington reported a male adult subject, who she previously dated, just kicked open her hotel door. The male adult subject kicked her, stole her car keys, and left the scene. Officers arrived and were unable to locate the subject. This investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence / Traffic Collision – Suspect Arrested
September 9 at 10:43 p.m., a traffic collision was reported in the area of Myrtle and Duarte. Upon arrival officers noticed that the driver who caused the collision displayed signs of intoxication. A DUI investigation was conducted and the investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Public Intoxication
September 9 at 11:43 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of S. Myrtle regarding a subject passed out inside a parked vehicle. Upon the officers’ arrival, a subject inside the parked vehicle was contacted and determined to be intoxicated. The subject was unable to care for himself and was arrested. He was transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 10 at 4:08 p.m., a caller from a business in the 700 block of S. Shamrock reported a subject entered the establishment and began yelling and screaming. Officers arrived and contacted the individual. He had outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Mental Evaluation
September 10 at 6:31 p.m., an employee from a coffee shop in the 800 block of W. Huntington reported a male adult was in front of their store behaving strangely. Officers arrived and contacted the male subject and found he was suicidal. He was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

Grand Theft Auto Recovery
September 10 at 6:38 p.m., a resident in the 1200 block of S. Mayflower reported a suspicious vehicle. A computer check determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Officers arrived and recovered the vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Drug Offense – Suspect Arrested
September 10 at 10:58 p.m., an employee from a business in the 700 block of W. Huntington reported a female adult subject was loitering on their property and was refusing to leave when she was asked to. Officers arrived and contacted the subject. She was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Prowling / Battery on an Officer – Suspect Arrested
September 11 at 5:03 a.m., a resident at an apartment building in the 1600 block of S. Primrose reported a male adult, who was not a resident, was prowling on the property and looking into her apartment window. Officers arrived and located the subject, who was completely naked and appeared to be on narcotics. The subject punched an officer in the face, subject was arrested. MFD responded and transported the subject to a hospital for treatment.

Suspicious Person
September 11 at 5:40 a.m., the reporting party reported seeing a male adult in the 400 block of E. Huntington who appeared to be rummaging through a large delivery/pickup box and loading items into a backpack. Officers were not able to locate the subject, however, they were able to determine that the box was not burglarized. This investigation is continuing.

Trespass Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 11 at 7:30 a.m., a male adult locked himself in the bathroom of a business in the 200 block of W. Huntington and refused to leave. Officers arrived and ordered the subject to leave the business. The subject refused and was detained by officers. The business owners placed the subject under private persons arrest for trespassing. The subject was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Theft
September 11 at 10:44 a.m., a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a theft. Officers arrived and searched the area, but the suspect had already fled. This investigation is continuing.

September 11 at 11:09 a.m., a caller reported a theft from their business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. Officers arrived, but the suspects had already fled with the merchandise. This investigation is continuing.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 11 at 12:41 p.m., a caller asked for a welfare check on a male adult who was walking into traffic in the area of Alta Vista and Walnut. Officers arrived and contacted the male subject. A computer check revealed he had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Domestic Battery
September 12 at 12:46 a.m., a victim walked into the MPD lobby to report that she was a victim of domestic violence. She stated that her live-in boyfriend battered her after a verbal altercation regarding his ex-girlfriend. Officers went to the residents, but the boyfriend was not there. This investigation is continuing.

Reckless Driving – Suspect Arrested
September 12 at 7:58 a.m., an officer observed a motorist commit several traffic violations that were a danger to the public and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Mental Evaluation
September 12 at 8:19 a.m., a caller reported an elderly resident assaulted another elderly resident in the 100 block of S. Myrtle. The subject was deemed a danger to others and was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

Theft – Suspect Arrested
September 12 at 11:28 a.m., a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a theft. Officers arrived and located the suspect nearby. The property was returned to the business. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.

Structure Fire
September 12 at 11:34 a.m., a caller from the 300 block of California reported seeing flames and smoke coming from a house. Officers arrived and saw flames coming from the windows. MFD arrived and extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.

Mail Theft
September 13 at 12:12 p.m., a victim in the 900 block of Norumbega reported her mail had been stolen the evening prior. She provided the investigating officer with suspect vehicle information. Investigation continuing.

Injury Traffic Collision
September 13 at 2:27 p.m., an injury traffic collision was reported in the 200 block of S. Sunset. An investigation revealed that the driver was experiencing a medical emergency and collided into parked vehicle. The driver was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 13 at 4:49 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 200 block of W. Lime when the officer observed a vehicle in violation of a vehicle code. A computer check of the driver revealed she had outstanding warrants. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Crowd Gathers for Unveiling of Steve Baker Bear

A crowd gathered at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Foothill today for the unveiling of the Steve Baker bear, honoring former City Historian Steve Baker, who died last year. Mayor Becky Shevlin said the “irreplaceable” Baker knew more about Monrovia history “than all of us combined,” and was always ready to share his knowledge, often in the form of a humorous story. More Arrestees Will Be Released Without Bail Starting Oct. 1

Beginning October 1, 2023, a greater number of people arrested in Monrovia -- and across LA County -- will be released without bail, due to a new set of bail schedules approved by the Superior Court of Los Angeles County for suspects arrested in non-violent felonies and misdemeanor crimes.

The LA County Police Chief's Association released this press release:

On July 18, 2023, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County approved a new set of bail schedules for suspects arrested in non-violent felonies and misdemeanor crimes. The new bail schedule, slated to take effect in LA County on October 1, 2023, will dictate one of three possible actions by law enforcement for an arrestee's release: Cite and Release (CR), Book and Release (BR) or Magistrate Review (MR). Capital offenses such as murder with special circumstances and limited felonies are not eligible for pre-arraignment, zero bail release.

The Sheriff's Department and all Police Departments in the County must comply with this protocol.

The newly approved Release Protocols will replace the traditional bail schedules. Instead of assigning money bail amount to non-violent felonies and misdemeanors, a majority of arrestees will now be released at the location of the arrest (CR) or booked in jail, and then released on their own recognizance with a citation for a future court date (BR). In some cases, suspects arrested for certain crimes which pose an increased risk to the public will be referred to an on-call magistrate, who will have discretion to determine the appropriate release terms and conditions (MR). Some examples of release conditions by a magistrate may include prohibitions against committing crimes, sending text messages to remind the arrestee to appear in court and visits with court staff.

As a result of these new release terms, law enforcement must Cite and Release or Book and Release arrestees in nearly all theft offenses, vehicle code violations, and crimes against property such as petty theft, and vandalism. Offenses involving guns, sexual battery, crimes against children/ elders and contact with minors with intent to commit a sexual offense are examples of offenses subject to Magistrate Review. Magistrates will consider the crime, and a risk assessment report to determine whether the arrestee should be released with no conditions or determine the least restrictive, non-financial conditions intended to address whether the arrestee is likely to return to court. All offenses in the MR category are designated as zero bail offenses.

As an example of this change, a person arrested for False Imprisonment under this new protocol would be eligible for BR. Under the previous bail schedule, their bail amount would be $50,000. Likewise, a person arrested for theft of an automobile is eligible for BR, while under the previous bail schedule, their bail amount would be $35,000.

This represents a significant change in protocols for all law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles County Police Chiefs' Association (LACPCA) remains committed to the safety and security of our communities. We will continue to work within the processes set forth by the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, and as a profession, make recommendations for improvement at every opportunity.

The Monrovia School Board will meet in special closed session tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss, "Public Employee Discipline/Dismissal/Release." There will be an opportunity for public comment before the board goes into closed session, and the agenda says there will be a public report following the closed session. Details. A Moment in Monrovia History: Judge John Dustin Bicknell, Cofounder of Monrovia

John Dustin Bicknell was a Los Angeles attorney and judge, who owned a considerable property in Monrovia, including on Prospect where he built a small cottage. Unlike the other founders of Monrovia, he never built a large home. He also owned property northeast of Grand Ave. After his death, his widow or his daughter Mary Cates, built a large house at 411 Prospect and his daughter Edna Baggs built a large home northeast of Grand Avenue. Canyon Early Learning Center Students Get Free Dental Checkups

Monrovia's Canyon Early Learning Center (CELC) hosted dental students from Western University in Pomona for free dental check-ups for its students. The dental students conducted exams in multiple classrooms and communicated recommendations for additional dental care to families. Western University will continue offering free dental check-ups to CELC students in the coming months.

August 31 at 9:19 a.m., a victim in the 800 block of W. Duarte came into the MPD Lobby to report that a former boyfriend known to carry weapons found out where she is currently living and proceeded to vandalize some of her property while also making threats via text message. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
August 31 at 3:21 p.m., a caller in the 600 block of W. Huntington reported that her purse with all of its belongings were stolen out of her shopping cart while she was in the store. This investigation is continuing.

Drug Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 1 at 3:57 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Duarte and Alta Vista when they observed a bicyclist commit a vehicle code violation. A traffic stop was conducted and during the investigation the subject admitted to being in possession of drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested, issued a citation, and released at the scene.

Vehicle Burglary
September 1 at 12:42 p.m., a victim in the 100 block of W. Foothill reported that his car was burglarized while parked in a shopping center and property was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

September 1 at 2:27 p.m., a retail store in the 500 block of W. Huntington called to report a theft where jewelry was taken. This investigation is continuing.

September 2 at 11:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of S. Mountain regarding a mentally ill subject inside the building. Officers located the subject and were able to handcuff him. Once the officers attempted to put him in a patrol vehicle the subject kicked an officer. The subject was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

September 2 at 12:37 p.m., a business in the 800 block of W. Foothill requested officers remove a subject from the business. Officers arrived and located the subject who was unable to care for himself. He was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

Hit and Run Traffic Collision
September 2 at 2:33 p.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the area of Colorado and Fifth. A motorcyclist was hit, lost control, and crashed into a fence. The motorcyclist was not injured. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft Auto Recovery
September 2 at 2:49 p.m., a vehicle reported stolen in La Puente was located in the 3300 block of S. Peck Road. This investigation is continuing.

September 3 at 5:27 p.m., multiple callers in the 400 block of W. Lemon reported a woman acting erratically and battering neighbors. Officers arrived and where unable to locate the female subject. This investigation is continuing.

Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
September 3 at 5:37 p.m., a victim staying at a hotel in the 900 block of W. Huntington called to report that his wife had become intoxicated and battered him. Officers conducted an investigation and determined that the wife was the primary aggressor. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Commercial Burglary
September 3 at 4:12 a.m., officers responded to a burglary alarm in the 300 block of W. Huntington. Upon arrival officers observed the front door of the business forced open and the interior ransacked. The business owner responded to the location and could not immediately determine if any property was missing. This investigation is continuing.

Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
September 4 at 9:43 a.m., the victim came into the MPD lobby to report that her husband struck her on September 3. The victim had a visible mark on her chin. The suspect was contacted, arrested and taken into custody.

September 4 at 1:30 p.m., a victim in the 1100 block of Norumbega called to report that money was stolen from her and stole her niece’s purse. This investigation is continuing.

Wanted Person – Suspect Arrested
September 4 at 7:14 p.m., CHP called to report that they had conducted a traffic stop in the area of Live Oak and the 605 freeway on a suspect wanted for a warrant. Officer responded, arrested and took the subject into custody.

Drug Offense – Suspect Arrested
September 4 at 10:51 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 300 block of W. Evergreen regarding suspicious persons seen on security cameras loitering at the closed business. Officers arrived and contacted the suspects, one was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon
September 5 at 1:36 a.m., a victim called in the 100 block of W. Duarte called to report that a known male subject had verbally assaulted him and his wife and threw a very large rock at the victim which made contact with the victim. The subject was gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
September 5 at 3:47 a.m., a victim in the 300 block of E. Foothill called to report that his vehicle's catalytic converter had just been stolen. The suspect vehicle was described as a darker Toyota Camry. Officers conducted an area check and stopped a similar vehicle, but it was determined to be unrelated. Investigation continuing.

Commercial Burglary
September 5 at 6:13 a.m., an employee from a business in the 600 block of W. Huntington advised that the glass to one of the doors was shattered. Officers arrived and cleared the interior. Surveillance video shows two male suspects breaking the window, going inside, using a power tool to open the safe and items were stolen from the safe. This investigation is continuing.

September 5 at 8:30 a.m., the reporting party called from the 100 block of N. Fifth and stated that sometime throughout the night, the catalytic converter to his vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

September 5 at 9:09 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of E. Huntington called to report that the catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

September 5 at 10:11 am, a caller in the 200 block of E. Olive stated that sometime over the weekend, someone stole the catalytic converter to his vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

September 5 at 10:19 a.m., a victim came into the MPD lobby to file a fraud report. The victim was defrauded approximately $87,000. This investigation is continuing.

September 5 at 1:36 p.m., a victim came into the MPD lobby to report that someone intercepted her check and fraudulently cashed it. This investigation is continuing.

Robbery
September 5 at 2:17 p.m., officers responded to a parking lot in the 600 block of W. Huntington regarding a robbery. The victim was sitting in his vehicle when a suspect approached him, pushed his head and stole his necklace. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft – Suspect Arrested
September 5 at 2:21 p.m., a victim in the 300 block of W. Huntington called to report his electric bike stolen. Officers arrived and were unable to locate a suspect. Later that day, the victim called to report that he had located a suspect in possession of his bike. Officers arrived and located the suspect. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Domestic Battery – Suspect Arrested
September 5 at 5:03 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of W. Foothill regarding a possible domestic violence. Officers arrived and contacted a female subject who claimed her husband was mentally unstable and she was just trying to calm him down. The husband stated she struck him with a stand and showed officers videos. An investigation revealed the wife was the primary aggressor. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Domestic Violence / Traffic Collision – Suspect Arrested
September 6 at 2:14 p.m., officers were in the 800 block of W. Duarte when they witnessed a vehicle chasing another vehicle and colliding into it several times. Officers stopped both vehicles. Further investigation revealed an ex-girlfriend was chasing her ex-boyfriend and collided into his vehicle. The male subject complained of pain and was treated by paramedics. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Petty Theft
September 6 at 1:24 p.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported that they had video surveillance of a subject stealing a $400 in tools. The subject was no longer in the store. This investigation is continuing.

Non-Injury Traffic Collision
September 6 at 2:26 p.m., officers responded to the area of California and Duarte regarding an injury traffic collision. A vehicle failed to stop at a red light and collided into a vehicle with three occupants. All occupants were transported to a hospital for treatment. The vehicle at fault was issued a citation.

Injury Traffic Collision
September 6 at 5:55 p.m., an injury traffic collision was reported in the area of Shamrock and Foothill. A party complained of pain and were treated at the scene.

September 6 at 5:57 p.m., officers responded to a parking lot in the 1600 block of S. Mountain regarding an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian. An investigation revealed the driver did not see the pedestrian walking and struck her. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Vandalism / Assault
September 6 at 9:19 p.m., a caller in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a male suspect entered a business and started throwing and breaking items. The suspect also punched an employee as he walked out of the store. Officers with the assistance of the police helicopter searched the area, but were unable to locate a suspect.
