Trader Joe's Will Stop 'Exoticizing' Other Cultures

Monrovia-based Trader Joe's is changing the labeling on some of its products, such as Trader Ming’s, Arabian Joe’s, Trader Jose’s, Trader Giotto’s and Trader Joe San, because such labels have been accused of being racist because they "exoticize" other cultures. https://is.gd/QopPvT

  1. That really does not make sense. The idea of a Trader Joe is that person who travels the world, experiences the food of other cultures, and brings it back to share with others. This is getting unbelievable. People, just treat everyone courteously and respectfully. It is not that hard.

  2. Well as long as they are changing the names, they need to change Trader Joe's name since that is exoticizing Joe's culture. Everyone comes from a particular culture.

I am all for equality of the races but this is going overboard.

  3. High school kids haven't enough intellect to be making name decisions, these days.

This is a vanity play and "look at me!!!" for someone who should be worrying about real issues.

  4. This is plane and simple silly. People are way too sensitive needlessly. Who really had a problem with this. Are we going to do research to find what meanings may be hidden for names of everything else as well. Maybe that car you drive is named after something or someone that is "questionable". Go thing they dropped the Pontiac line! I really wonder how many Apaches object the the Arcadia High School celebrating Apaches by using that name for their high school that strives for high performance in learning and sports.

    1. You’re bringing up the Arcadia Apaches is interesting, because I was a reporter covering the Arcadia school board many years ago when someone objected to Arcadia Schools use of “Apaches” as racist. What the school board did was get in touch with the Apache nation and ask if they objected. They didn’t. They had no problem with it at all.

  5. I couldn’t agree more with the comments. Wait till the justice warriors figure out Coca-Cola was invented by John S. Pemberton. Pemberton was a Lt. Col. from Georgia in the confederate army. I hope none of them are Coke drinkers!
