Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 21 at 3:51 a.m., residents in the 1200 block of S. Magnolia called police to report a vehicle traveling north on Magnolia had collided into several parked cars. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on a skateboard. Officers searched the area, but could not locate the suspect driver. Investigation continuing.
Vehicle Burglaries
February 21 in the early a.m., two vehicle burglaries that occurred overnight were reported to police. The burglaries occurred in the 200 block of Melrose and the 200 block of S. Magnolia. In both incidents the vehicle windows were smashed and items were taken from inside. Investigations continuing.
Petty Theft – Three Suspects Arrested
February 21 at 1:45 p.m., an employee from a business in the 3000 block of S. Peck called police to report three subjects seen throwing car parts from the business over a fence without paying. Officers arrived and located the three subjects. They were all detained and arrested for the theft.
Attempt Robbery
February 21 at 3:33 p.m., an attempt robbery was reported at a business in the 3000 block of S. Peck. A subject concealed speakers in a bag and left the business without purchasing them. Security attempted to detain the subject and a struggle ensued. The suspect picked up a saw blade during the struggle and the security guard sustained a small cut on his finger. The suspect dropped the stolen property and fled in a waiting vehicle prior to the officer arriving. The suspect was not located and the investigation continuing.
Theft From a Vehicle – Suspect Arrested
February 22 at 8:40 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of Valle Vista called to report that sometime during the night a subject entered his unlocked vehicle and stole golf clubs. Later that same day, the golf clubs were recovered by San Dimas Sheriff’s Department and a suspect was arrested. The golf clubs were returned to the owner.
Theft From a Vehicle
February 22 at 5:27 p.m., a resident from the 300 block of Valle Vista called to report that sometime during the night, someone entered his unlocked vehicle and stole items. Investigation continuing.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 22 at 8:55 p.m., an officer was patrolling the area of 100 Poinsettia when he saw a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation. The officer conducted a traffic stop and discovered the driver was intoxicated. Officers conducted an investigation for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Violation of Domestic Court Order – Suspect Arrested
February 22 at 9:04 p.m., a resident in the 1400 block of Magnolia called to report suspicious circumstances regarding someone yelling. When officers arrived, they contacted a male and female who had been arguing. While talking to the female, they discovered there was a restraining order restricting her from the residence where the officers located her. She was arrested for violation of the court order.
Grand Theft Auto
February 22 at 10:54 p.m., a resident in the 2100 block of Peck called to report her vehicle was stolen while it was parked in front of her residence. Investigation continuing.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 22 at 11:25 p.m., a caller report an intoxicated male subject that was standing by a truck in the 700 block of E. Huntington. Officers responded and located the subject and the vehicle, which had flat tires. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing the surveillance footage that showed the subject drive the truck into the gas station parking lot, a DUI investigation was conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Drug Activity/Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 23 at 1:23 a.m., officers were patrolling the area of 400 S. Myrtle when they saw a male subject urinating in public. They contacted the subject and determined that he was too intoxicated to care for his own safety or the safety of others. The subject was arrested for public intoxication and during a search of his person, officers discovered he was also in possession of drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 23 at 2:56 p.m., an officer initiated a consensual encounter with a known subject. The subject granted consent to search his person and the officer located drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Injury Traffic Collision
February 23 at 7:03 p.m., a traffic collision was reported in the 800 block of S. Mountain. A motorist was traveling east on Royal Oaks and entered the intersection at Mountain. The other motorist was traveling north on Mountain, approaching Royal Oaks, and failed to stop at the flashing red light, colliding in the motorist traveling on Royal Oaks. A passenger complained of pain and was treated at the scene by paramedics. The driver at fault was issued a citation.
Grand Theft
February 23 at 10:24 p.m., an employee from a business in the 900 block of W. Huntington called police to report a grand theft. An unknown male suspect entered a wedding reception and spent two hours removing numerous envelopes from a wedding money box. He then fled the scene. The investigation is continuing.
Grand Theft
February 24 at 8:16 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Palm. The victim reported that while she was attending church, an unknown subject stole a large sum of money from purse. The victim had no idea who stole the money. Investigation continuing.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 25 at 12:11 a.m., an officer was on patrol the 3000 block of Peck when he saw a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver displayed signs of intoxication. A DUI investigation was conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Shoplifting/Warrants – Suspect Arrested
February 25 at 9:27 a.m., security for a store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a male subject had entered the store with an empty shopping bag and filled it with merchandise. He immediately went to the return merchandise desk and attempted to return what he had placed in the bag for cash. Store security detained him and called the police. An officer arrived and a computer check revealed the subject had four warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Stolen License Plate
February 25 at 9:34 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of E. Olive walked outside her home and discovered someone had stolen the front license plate off her vehicle sometime during the night. The plate was entered in the DMV computer system as stolen. This investigation is continuing.
Burglary/Possession of Stolen Property/Fraud/Parole Violation – Suspect Arrested
February 25 at 11:21 a.m., a subject was working in her office in the 500 block of S. Myrtle and left to go to her vehicle outside. When she returned to her officer, she discovered someone had entered while she was gone and took her purse, which had been hidden under her desk. The purse contained credit cards and personal information. Thirty minutes later, the victim's credit cards were used at several stores in Monrovia. One of the stores had video and officers recognized the suspect who used the victim’s card. Approximately three hours later, they located the suspect at Cypress and Sherman. The suspect was still in possession of the victim's credit cards. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Shoplifting/Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 26 at 9:37 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report they had a subject detained for shoplifting. Officers responded and made contact with both parties. The loss prevention employee said the subject picked up a power tool and attempted to walk out of the store without making any attempt to pay for it. A computer check revealed the subject also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was arrested, transported to the station, and booked for the warrant. He was issued a citation to appear in court for the theft.
Grand Theft Auto Recovery
February 26 at 3:50 p.m., a local tow company called to report one of the vehicles they had stored was reported stolen. They learned about it after they placed a lien sale on the vehicle and were denied for that reason. It had been reported stolen by embezzlement from a rental car company. An officer arrived and recovered the vehicle.
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia/Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
February 27 at 2:15 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 1600 S. Primrose when he contacted an individual in a parking structure. The subject was found to be a reported missing person. Further investigation revealed the subject was in possession of a syringe containing a controlled substance. The subject was issued a citation for the drug offense and was removed from the missing persons system.
Residential Burglary
February 27 at 9:23 a.m., a resident in the 700 block of Valley View discovered someone had been inside his home and took all his wife's jewelry. It is unknown when this occurred or how entry was made into the home. This investigation is continuing.

February 27 at 1:36 p.m., a resident in the 300 block of W. Colorado reported his locked garage had been broken into and multiple tools were stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Citrus Ranks Among Top Schools for Hispanics
For the 12th consecutive year, Citrus College, which serves Monrovia, has been recognized as one of the nation's top community colleges by Hispanic Outlook on Education, a national monthly magazine. This year, it ranked Citrus 25th out of the nation's more-than 1,100 community colleges for the number of Hispanic students receiving degrees and certificates. The college also ranked 32nd for total enrollment of Hispanic students.

~ The company, Overton Moore Pacific, plans to convert the current Frontier Building on Lime Avenue to a mixed-use self-storage project with 550 self-storage units, 4,470 square feet of ground floor retail/commercial space, and 1,247 square feet of ground floor office space. The Development Review Committee will consider the project in May.
~ The Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster reports that while higher-than-average rainfall has helped our groundwater level, it is still extremely low. We're still short around 52.9 billion gallons.
~ A growing amount of personal property stored on the west side of the Monrovia Public Library has been removed and is being stored at the Monrovia Police Department. Police posted a 72-hour notice on the property and when it elapsed on February 20, no one had relocated or moved the items. The Homeless Outreach Team tried to figure out whom it belonged to, without success.

Bobo Looking for Seeing Eye Human
Bobo, the sweet blind Pit Bull, is seeking a seeing-eye human soulmate. Must love dogs and have lots of patience to show him around and orient to his surroundings. Someone with a soothing voice to reassure him that he’s safe and help him feel confident. Bobo is blind and hesitant at first, but with a little help he can figure it out and resume his dog duties. This 3-year-old boy loves affection from all of his staff and volunteer friends, enjoys laying on his doggy bed, and loves filling his tummy with yummy dog treats.
The adoption fee for dogs is $140. All dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before going to their new home.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Monrovia Under Quarantine Because of Citrus Bug
It is now illegal to move citrus trees or other plants out of Monrovia, or to bring plants into town from other states or countries.
A press release from Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program explains:
“Due to the detection of an incurable plant disease called Huanglongbing (HLB) in Duarte, the California Department of Food and Agriculture has expanded the Los Angeles HLB quarantine area by 79 square miles to include the city of Monrovia. This quarantine means that it is illegal to move citrus trees and plant material out of the quarantine area and to bring citrus fruit or plant material into this area from other states or countries. “HLB kills all citrus trees it infects and is spread by a small pest called the Asian citrus psyllid as it feeds on leaves and stems of citrus trees. HLB is not harmful to humans or animals, but once a tree is infected, it will die and must be removed. “Agricultural officials are in the Monrovia area and working to protect backyard citrus trees by inspecting them for the disease.”
Symptoms of HLB include blotchy, yellowing of leaves, yellow shoots, lopsided, small and bitter fruit, and premature and excessive fruit drop.
Agriculture officials are working hard in the area to find and stop the disease. Please allow them to access your property.
Be sure to dry out citrus tree clippings or double bag them before removing the plant material from the property.
Control for ants on your citrus tree. Ants protect harmful pests like the Asian citrus psyllid. Place ant bait around citrus trees and follow the product’s label instructions.

Grand Theft
February 14 at 11:15 a.m., a grand theft was reported at a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington. On February 13, two male subjects entered the business and went immediately to the menswear section. They selected jeans and polo shirts, threw them into a garbage bag and fled the location. The investigation revealed these two suspects have done this at other local stores and are known to loss prevention. The investigation is continuing.
Attempted Robbery
February 14 at 12:10 p.m., an attempted robbery was reported in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle. The previous night, the male victim was walking on the street and was assaulted by four unknown male suspects. The suspects tried to pull his backpack off of him and a bystander interfered. The suspects ran east and out of sight. Investigation continuing.
Shoplifting / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 14 at 5:52 p.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report a subject was being detained by loss prevention for shoplifting. Officers arrived and discovered the subject also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
February 15 at 12:34 a.m., a caller reported a loud domestic dispute in the 700 block of W. Foothill. Officers arrived and contacted the subjects. An investigation revealed the couple were involved in an argument that escalated to them pushing each other, causing injuries. The male subject was determined to be the primary aggressor and was arrested for domestic violence.
Vehicle Burglaries
February 15 at 8:26 a.m., a subject called to report his vehicle was burglarized while he was inside Canyon Park. An officer responded and discovered that several other vehicles had also been burglarized. The suspects targeted hatchback vehicles, smashing the rear hatch window and rummaging for valuables while the owners were inside Canyon Park. Investigation continuing.
Suspicious Person / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 15 at 1:45 p.m., a resident called to report there were suspicious subjects loitering in the south alley in the 200 block of E. Chestnut. Officers arrived and contacted two subjects. A computer check revealed one of the subjects had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was arrested for the warrants.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision / Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 15 at 4:42 p.m., a traffic collision was reported in the 400 block of E. Foothill. The driver at fault was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with the vehicle in front of him. His vehicle then spun out, went up a curb and sheared off a fire hydrant. Officers arrived and discovered the driver at fault was intoxicated. The officers conducted an investigation for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Defrauding an Inn Keeper / Assault With a Deadly Weapon / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 16 at 4:12 p.m., police dispatch received a call from a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington. A subject was refusing to pay his hotel bill and refusing to leave the hotel room. The manager requested police remove him from the room. Officers asked the subject to leave the room, but he refused. A computer check of the subject revealed he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Officers entered the room and found the subject standing just inside the door, holding a large rock. Officers told the subject to drop the rock, but he would not comply. One of the officers activated his Taser and the subject was taken into custody.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 2:17 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 100 block of W. Foothill when he saw a subject who appeared to be intoxicated and unable to care for himself. The officer detained the subject and confirmed he was in no condition to care for himself or others. The subject was arrested for public intoxication and held for a sobering period.
Warrant / Court Order Violation – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 1:11 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 100 block of W. Palm when she saw a subject she knew had several warrants for his arrest and was in violation of a court order. The warrants were confirmed and the subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 1:13 p.m., an employee from a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington called police to report that a male subject concealed merchandise and left the store without paying for it. Officers arrived and detained the subject. The merchandise was recovered and the subject was arrested.
Vehicle Tampering
February 17 at 2:38 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of W. Duarte called to report that her unlocked vehicle was ransacked sometime during the night. The vehicle was parked in a rear parking lot of the complex. Nothing from the vehicle was missing. Investigation continuing.
Vehicle Burglary
February 18 at 7:45 a.m., a resident in the 1800 block of S. Peck walked outside his home and discovered someone had burglarized his vehicle sometime during the night. The suspect had shattered one of the car windows in order to gain entry. This investigation is continuing.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 18 at 8:05 a.m., a customer at a coffee shop in the 600 block of W. Huntington walked outside the store and found a motorist had collided into his parked motorcycle and left without leaving a note. The damage was significant enough that the motorist should have known they collided into the motorcycle. This investigation is continuing.
Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Suspect Arrested
February 18 at 10:23 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of W. Duarte reported her husband was yelling at her and she needed help. Officers responded and separated the two subjects to investigate. The investigation revealed the husband became angry with his wife and threw a glass jar at her, trying to hit her with it. She moved and the jar hit the wall behind her, breaking the jar. Officers arrested the male subject, who later bailed out of jail. A temporary emergency restraining order was obtained and served prior to his release.
Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 19 at 8:27 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of W. Foothill called to report a possible electricity theft involving an occupied vehicle. Officers arrived and contacted both occupants of the vehicle. The female occupant had two outstanding warrants for her arrest and she was arrested. The other occupant was released at the scene. No evidence was discovered to prove a theft of electricity.

February 20 at 5:30 p.m., security at a store in the 500 block of W. Huntington called police to report a shoplifter that had just left their store with merchandise without paying. Officers responded to the area and apprehended the suspect. The property was recovered and returned to the store. The subject was taken into custody and a computer check revealed he also had a warrant for his arrest, which was added to his charges.

February 20 at 6:47 p.m., a loss prevention employee from a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported a male subject that had just shoplifted from their store. Officers responded to the area, apprehended the subject, and the property was returned to the store. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
Grand Theft Auto Recovery
February 20 at 10:45 p.m., while handling a call for service in the 300 block of W. Huntington, an officer ran an unrelated vehicle license plate which returned stolen out of Los Angeles. LAPD was notified, along with the registered owner, and the vehicle was recovered.

February 15 at 8:26 a.m., a subject called to report his vehicle was burglarized while he was inside Canyon Park. An officer responded and discovered that several other vehicles had also been burglarized. The suspects targeted hatchback vehicles, smashing the rear hatch window and rummaging for valuables while the owners were inside Canyon Park. Investigation continuing.
Suspicious Person / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 15 at 1:45 p.m., a resident called to report there were suspicious subjects loitering in the south alley in the 200 block of E. Chestnut. Officers arrived and contacted two subjects. A computer check revealed one of the subjects had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was arrested for the warrants.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision / Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 15 at 4:42 p.m., a traffic collision was reported in the 400 block of E. Foothill. The driver at fault was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with the vehicle in front of him. His vehicle then spun out, went up a curb and sheared off a fire hydrant. Officers arrived and discovered the driver at fault was intoxicated. The officers conducted an investigation for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Defrauding an Inn Keeper / Assault With a Deadly Weapon / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 16 at 4:12 p.m., police dispatch received a call from a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington. A subject was refusing to pay his hotel bill and refusing to leave the hotel room. The manager requested police remove him from the room. Officers asked the subject to leave the room, but he refused. A computer check of the subject revealed he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Officers entered the room and found the subject standing just inside the door, holding a large rock. Officers told the subject to drop the rock, but he would not comply. One of the officers activated his Taser and the subject was taken into custody.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 2:17 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 100 block of W. Foothill when he saw a subject who appeared to be intoxicated and unable to care for himself. The officer detained the subject and confirmed he was in no condition to care for himself or others. The subject was arrested for public intoxication and held for a sobering period.
Warrant / Court Order Violation – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 1:11 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 100 block of W. Palm when she saw a subject she knew had several warrants for his arrest and was in violation of a court order. The warrants were confirmed and the subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested
February 17 at 1:13 p.m., an employee from a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington called police to report that a male subject concealed merchandise and left the store without paying for it. Officers arrived and detained the subject. The merchandise was recovered and the subject was arrested.
Vehicle Tampering
February 17 at 2:38 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of W. Duarte called to report that her unlocked vehicle was ransacked sometime during the night. The vehicle was parked in a rear parking lot of the complex. Nothing from the vehicle was missing. Investigation continuing.
Vehicle Burglary
February 18 at 7:45 a.m., a resident in the 1800 block of S. Peck walked outside his home and discovered someone had burglarized his vehicle sometime during the night. The suspect had shattered one of the car windows in order to gain entry. This investigation is continuing.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 18 at 8:05 a.m., a customer at a coffee shop in the 600 block of W. Huntington walked outside the store and found a motorist had collided into his parked motorcycle and left without leaving a note. The damage was significant enough that the motorist should have known they collided into the motorcycle. This investigation is continuing.
Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Suspect Arrested
February 18 at 10:23 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of W. Duarte reported her husband was yelling at her and she needed help. Officers responded and separated the two subjects to investigate. The investigation revealed the husband became angry with his wife and threw a glass jar at her, trying to hit her with it. She moved and the jar hit the wall behind her, breaking the jar. Officers arrested the male subject, who later bailed out of jail. A temporary emergency restraining order was obtained and served prior to his release.
Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 19 at 8:27 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of W. Foothill called to report a possible electricity theft involving an occupied vehicle. Officers arrived and contacted both occupants of the vehicle. The female occupant had two outstanding warrants for her arrest and she was arrested. The other occupant was released at the scene. No evidence was discovered to prove a theft of electricity.
Shoplifting / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 20 at 5:30 p.m., security at a store in the 500 block of W. Huntington called police to report a shoplifter that had just left their store with merchandise without paying. Officers responded to the area and apprehended the suspect. The property was recovered and returned to the store. The subject was taken into custody and a computer check revealed he also had a warrant for his arrest, which was added to his charges.

February 20 at 6:47 p.m., a loss prevention employee from a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported a male subject that had just shoplifted from their store. Officers responded to the area, apprehended the subject, and the property was returned to the store. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
Grand Theft Auto Recovery
February 20 at 10:45 p.m., while handling a call for service in the 300 block of W. Huntington, an officer ran an unrelated vehicle license plate which returned stolen out of Los Angeles. LAPD was notified, along with the registered owner, and the vehicle was recovered.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 21 at 3:51 a.m., a resident in the 1200 block of S. Magnolia called to report a vehicle traveling northbound on Magnolia that collided into several parked vehicles. The driver exited the vehicle and fled from the scene on a skateboard. No other description was given. Officers searched the area, but did not locate the driver. Investigation continuing.

Goodbye Lime Bikes; Crime Up; Fire Department Calls Up; City Getting New Ambulance Company; Etc.
In his latest report (https://goo.gl/aOqX7O) City Manager Oliver Chi reports:
~ Lime Bikes are going away, but will likely be replaced by other bikes. Chi said Lime is getting out of the bikeshare biz to focus on scooters. All its Monrovia bikes will be removed by March 15. The city is considering replacing Lime with a bike program Lyft is developing, or an e-bike program available through the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
~ Monrovia crime is up. From 2017 to 2018 the city had a 7.3% increase in Part 1 (serious) crimes. He writes that "we saw an increase in both violent Part 1 crimes (3.0%) and non-violent Part 1 crimes (7.6%), and in addition, when we compare our 2018 crime numbers against calendar year 2015 (which is the year in which we recorded our historic low crime rate), Monrovia has seen a 31.2% increase in Part I crimes." He adds that there have been similar and greater increases in Part I crimes throughout LA County and in the State of California. He adds, "Law enforcement personnel have attributed these significant increases in criminal activity to the impact of State legislation that has been approved during the past few years, including AB 109, Proposition 47, and Proposition 57."
~ Monrovia Fire Department is also getting more calls for service, up 2.2% from 2017 to 2018. 4,364 in 2018 vs 4,270 in 2017. Since 2014 there has been a 15.9% increase in fire and rescue service, or 599 additional service requests annually.
~ Schaefer Ambulance, which serves Monrovia under contract with LA County, is going out of business. Care Ambulance, which provides ambulance services for several communities surrounding Monrovia, will fill in on an interim basis.
~ Monrovia has been awarded $500,000 from the Southern California Association of Governments to evaluate ways to optimize the GoMonrovia public transit program. Ideas include: An employer transportation subsidy program, which would use GoMonrovia, and hiring specialists to further analyze GoMonrovia data.
~ Council Member Gloria Crudgington recently had cancer surgery, and "all 21 lymph nodes that were removed during her surgery came back as being 100% cancer free." This is a strong indication that the cancer had not spread. In other words, good news.

Last seen: Near Las Tunas Drive & Golden West, 10:00am, 02/17/19.
WING KUEN CHOW was last seen on the Metro bus line 78 at Las Tunas Drive and Golden West, heading westbound. Mr. Chow suffers from dementia and requires medication daily for other health problems.
WING KUEN CHOW was last seen wearing a jean jacket, dark blue pants, dark colored "flat cap" style hat and glasses. Mr. Chow did not have a cell phone with him.

Clifton Teacher Honored at LA Clippers Game
Clifton Middle School’s Daniela Mazzeo was recognized on court at the Los Angeles Clippers game on Feb. 13 for her success as a teacher.
She has provided instruction and guidance to robotics students, which has led to multiple awards and recognition for Clifton’s teams, and is working on a plan to expand Clifton’s traditional yearbook program by adding multi-media.

February 7 at 12:25 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of Oakglade called to report that her purse was stolen from her unlocked vehicle. The suspect then attempted to use the victim’s credit cards to purchase merchandise in neighboring cities, but was unsuccessful. The investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision / Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 7 at 7:27 p.m., a caller reported that a vehicle had collided into two parked cars and then parked along the curb near the intersection of Lemon and Shamrock. Officers responded and found the driver was intoxicated. They conducted an investigation for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.

February 8 at 5:54 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of Bonita called to report a male subject loitering in the area. Officers contacted the subject, and a consensual search revealed a pipe for smoking methamphetamine in his possession. He was arrested for the paraphernalia and released with a citation to appear in court on the charge.

February 8 at 6:28 p.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 600 block of Linwood. The victim was walking on Linwood when a vehicle began reversing and slightly struck him. The vehicle drove away without making contact with the victim. The victim complained of pain, but refused medical treatment. Investigation continuing.

February 9 at 8:42 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of Prospect called to report an attempted burglary at his home. When he woke in the morning, he saw a notification on his Ring Doorbell from 12:38 a.m. He viewed it and saw that an unknown male subject had rushed his door in an attempt to break it down. When it did not break, the suspect ran back to a waiting vehicle, which fled the area. Investigation continuing.
Warrants / Possession of Narcotics – Suspect Arrested
February 9 at 10:20 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 1800 block of Tenth when he saw a subject on a bicycle commit a traffic violation. A stop was conducted and a computer check revealed the subject had outstanding warrants for his arrest. The subject was arrested for the warrants, and during a search of his person, he was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine, which was added to his charges.
No-Bail Warrant / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 9 at 4:40 p.m., an officer was patrolling the area near Myrtle and Longden when he saw a suspicious vehicle. He ran a computer check on the vehicle, which revealed the registered owner had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and a no-bail warrant for drug sales. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The registered owner was driving the vehicle and was arrested for the warrants. The subject was also found to be in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

February 9 at 6:22 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a traffic collision in the 800 block of W. Huntington. A semi-truck and trailer hauling electricity poles was exiting the freeway with a follow safety vehicle. An SUV was also exiting the freeway and approached the turn at a high rate of speed, bypassing the follow safety vehicle. When both the truck and SUV were turning off the freeway, the poles on the trailer collided into the side rear window of the SUV. No one was injured and the party at fault was issued a citation.
Armed Robbery
February 9 at 6:57 p.m., a husband and wife were getting into their vehicle in the 600 block of W. Huntington, when they were approached by two male Black suspects on each side of the vehicle that demanded money. One of the suspects brandished a silver handgun, and the suspects took the wife's purse and the husband's wallet. The suspects fled in a white sedan. The husband's wallet was recovered down the street. The investigation is continuing.
Grand Theft
February 9 at 8:28 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 1200 block of N. Canyon. The victim had parked his vehicle in the area and went for a run. He did not lock the vehicle. When he returned, his wallet and his wife's cell phone had been taken. He was later notified that his credit card was used at a business in Duarte. Investigation continuing.

February 9 at 10:45 p.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 800 block of W. Huntington. Two motorists were making a left turn from the freeway off-ramp onto Huntington. While they were turning, one of the vehicles sideswiped the other and then fled east on Huntington. The suspect vehicle was described as a gray SUV. Investigation continuing.

February 10 at 2:35 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. The officer found the driver to be intoxicated. An investigation was conducted for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.

February 10 at 10:47 a.m., an employee from a business in the 2100 block of S. Myrtle called police to report that four storage units had the locks cut off and the doors were open. Officers responded and determined the suspects gained entry to the property by pushing down the gate off of Peck Road. Investigation continuing.
Grand Theft Auto – Suspect Arrested
February 10 at 10:00 p.m., an officer located a stolen vehicle that was traveling north in the 2200 block of S. Myrtle. Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver. The vehicle was reported stolen by the Los Angeles Police Department.

February 11 at 6:58 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from a hotel parking lot in the 900 block of S. Fifth. The hotel guest walked outside in the morning and discovered someone had stolen his Chevrolet van. Officers had the vehicle entered into the stolen vehicle system, and several hours later, the vehicle was stopped by police in Covina. Covina officers arrested the driver for Grand Theft Auto.

February 11 at 7:08 a.m., a motorist reported that she had just collided with another vehicle in the 1600 block of S. Shamrock. Officers responded to investigate. No one was injured. After speaking with both parties, the driver at fault was issued a citation.

February 11 at 8:42 a.m., an employee of a store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a male subject just left their store with merchandise without paying. Officers responded and located the subject, but he jumped into the nearby wash area and fled. He had discarded the stolen merchandise, which was recovered and returned to the store. This investigation is continuing.
Violation of Court Order / Alcohol Offense
February 11 at 12:32 p.m., a resident in the 1200 block of S. Sherman reported her daughter was in her front yard drinking alcohol. The resident had an active restraining order against the subject. When officers arrived, the restrained person was gone. This investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 11 at 3:30 p.m., a motorist reported that he collided with another motorist at the intersection of Mayflower and Huntington. He reported no one was injured. Officers responded to investigate. Neither driver wanted a police report taken. They just wanted an officer to keep the peace while they exchanged information.
Trespassing / Obstructing Officers / Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
February 11 at 4:10 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of E. Los Angeles called police to report an unknown female subject that was standing on her front porch for no apparent reason. Officers arrived to speak with the subject, who immediately ran from the officers. The subject jumped fences and went into other private backyards. She was eventually apprehended and found to be under the influence of a controlled substance. She was taken to a nearby hospital for a medical condition. Charges will be filed with the District Attorney's Office.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 11 at 5:08 p.m., a caller reported a male and female subject in the 100 block of E. Lemon who appeared to be heavily intoxicated. Officers arrived and found the female subject was unable to walk without assistance and had fallen prior to police arrival. The male subject was also extremely intoxicated. Both were unable to care for their own safety and were arrested for public intoxication.

February 12 at 8:50 a.m., a resident in the 1200 block of Sherman called to report that her daughter was at the location in violation of an active restraining order. Officers arrived and located the daughter in the backyard of the property. The officers confirmed the restraining order and arrested the daughter.

February 12 at 4:45 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of N. Canyon called to report her vehicle had been broken into and a backpack that was left inside was taken. The suspect shattered the passenger front window to gain entry. Investigation continuing.
Violation of Court Ordered Probation / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 13 at 7:17 a.m., officers were taking a report at a business in the 100 block of W. Lemon when they observed a known subject in an alley in violation of his court ordered probation, restraining him from being near Library Park. He was also subject to search and was found to be in possession of a large amount of illegal fireworks and a glass pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken into custody.

February 13 at 9:24 a.m., two vehicles collided into one another in the 700 block of W. Duarte. Officers responded and found both drivers were not injured. The drivers did not desire a collision investigation to be conducted and they exchanged information. The cause of the collision was found to be failure to yield to on-coming traffic from a stop sign.

February 13, at 1:35 p.m., a shoplifting incident was reported at a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. A male subject left the store with merchandise without paying for the items. The investigation revealed where the subject worked, however, he was not at the location. Later in the day, officers returned to the suspect's place of work and located him. A computer check revealed he also had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody. The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the store.

February 9 at 8:28 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 1200 block of N. Canyon. The victim had parked his vehicle in the area and went for a run. He did not lock the vehicle. When he returned, his wallet and his wife's cell phone had been taken. He was later notified that his credit card was used at a business in Duarte. Investigation continuing.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 9 at 10:45 p.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 800 block of W. Huntington. Two motorists were making a left turn from the freeway off-ramp onto Huntington. While they were turning, one of the vehicles sideswiped the other and then fled east on Huntington. The suspect vehicle was described as a gray SUV. Investigation continuing.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 10 at 2:35 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. The officer found the driver to be intoxicated. An investigation was conducted for driving under the influence and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Commerical Burglary
February 10 at 10:47 a.m., an employee from a business in the 2100 block of S. Myrtle called police to report that four storage units had the locks cut off and the doors were open. Officers responded and determined the suspects gained entry to the property by pushing down the gate off of Peck Road. Investigation continuing.
Grand Theft Auto – Suspect Arrested
February 10 at 10:00 p.m., an officer located a stolen vehicle that was traveling north in the 2200 block of S. Myrtle. Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver. The vehicle was reported stolen by the Los Angeles Police Department.

February 11 at 6:58 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from a hotel parking lot in the 900 block of S. Fifth. The hotel guest walked outside in the morning and discovered someone had stolen his Chevrolet van. Officers had the vehicle entered into the stolen vehicle system, and several hours later, the vehicle was stopped by police in Covina. Covina officers arrested the driver for Grand Theft Auto.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 11 at 7:08 a.m., a motorist reported that she had just collided with another vehicle in the 1600 block of S. Shamrock. Officers responded to investigate. No one was injured. After speaking with both parties, the driver at fault was issued a citation.
Shoplifting
February 11 at 8:42 a.m., an employee of a store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported a male subject just left their store with merchandise without paying. Officers responded and located the subject, but he jumped into the nearby wash area and fled. He had discarded the stolen merchandise, which was recovered and returned to the store. This investigation is continuing.
Violation of Court Order / Alcohol Offense
February 11 at 12:32 p.m., a resident in the 1200 block of S. Sherman reported her daughter was in her front yard drinking alcohol. The resident had an active restraining order against the subject. When officers arrived, the restrained person was gone. This investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 11 at 3:30 p.m., a motorist reported that he collided with another motorist at the intersection of Mayflower and Huntington. He reported no one was injured. Officers responded to investigate. Neither driver wanted a police report taken. They just wanted an officer to keep the peace while they exchanged information.
Trespassing / Obstructing Officers / Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
February 11 at 4:10 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of E. Los Angeles called police to report an unknown female subject that was standing on her front porch for no apparent reason. Officers arrived to speak with the subject, who immediately ran from the officers. The subject jumped fences and went into other private backyards. She was eventually apprehended and found to be under the influence of a controlled substance. She was taken to a nearby hospital for a medical condition. Charges will be filed with the District Attorney's Office.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 11 at 5:08 p.m., a caller reported a male and female subject in the 100 block of E. Lemon who appeared to be heavily intoxicated. Officers arrived and found the female subject was unable to walk without assistance and had fallen prior to police arrival. The male subject was also extremely intoxicated. Both were unable to care for their own safety and were arrested for public intoxication.
Violation of Court Order – Suspect Arrested
February 12 at 8:50 a.m., a resident in the 1200 block of Sherman called to report that her daughter was at the location in violation of an active restraining order. Officers arrived and located the daughter in the backyard of the property. The officers confirmed the restraining order and arrested the daughter.
Vehicle Burglary
February 12 at 4:45 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of N. Canyon called to report her vehicle had been broken into and a backpack that was left inside was taken. The suspect shattered the passenger front window to gain entry. Investigation continuing.
Violation of Court Ordered Probation / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 13 at 7:17 a.m., officers were taking a report at a business in the 100 block of W. Lemon when they observed a known subject in an alley in violation of his court ordered probation, restraining him from being near Library Park. He was also subject to search and was found to be in possession of a large amount of illegal fireworks and a glass pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 13 at 9:24 a.m., two vehicles collided into one another in the 700 block of W. Duarte. Officers responded and found both drivers were not injured. The drivers did not desire a collision investigation to be conducted and they exchanged information. The cause of the collision was found to be failure to yield to on-coming traffic from a stop sign.
Shoplifting / Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 13, at 1:35 p.m., a shoplifting incident was reported at a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. A male subject left the store with merchandise without paying for the items. The investigation revealed where the subject worked, however, he was not at the location. Later in the day, officers returned to the suspect's place of work and located him. A computer check revealed he also had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody. The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the store.

Osze- Shy But Sweet
Osze (A469807) is a 12-year-old Chihuahua who is very affectionate but takes a little time to open up. He seems to be a shy dog who just loves a good cuddle session now and again. Once he's on your lap, good luck getting him off! He is always eager to accept treats that are given to him and he is overall a gentle and sweet dog. Osze shares a kennel with his son, Guerro (A469808), who is 9 years old. Osze likes spending time with his son but also loves interacting with other dogs he’s met on Wiggle Waggle Waggin’ field trips. Robotics Teams Compete at Monrovia High Today
Ten Monrovia schools robotics teams are competing today (details: https://goo.gl/jMfXvk) in the annual Inter-League Tournament. Six are from Monrovia High, two from Clifton Middle School, and two from Santa Fe Computer Magnet School. Top-scoring teams will advance to the LA Regional Championships at Monrovia High on March 9.
Students will control robots they have designed, built, and programmed in head-to-head challenges that simulate space rover actions such as landing, mining, sample gathering, and parking.

The Legend of Norumbega
I was reading Milton’s Paradise Lost, motivated by the guilty sense that I hadn’t read much but pop detective books lately, when to my surprise I encountered the name, “Norumbega,” which a footnote said was a place in New England that showed up on ancient maps.
Wikipedia says Norumbega “is a legendary settlement in northeastern North America which appeared on many early maps from the 1500s until American colonization. The houses were said to have pillars of gold and the inhabitants carried quarts of pearls on their heads.”
It adds that Bangor, Maine, embraced the legend in the nineteenth century, naming its municipal hall "Norumbega Hall," and in 1886 inventor Joseph Barker Stearns built a mansion named "Norumbega Castle," in Camden, Maine.
So how did our Norumbega get it’s name? I asked City Historian Steve Baker, who poked around a bit and found that around 1913 the area was owned by three men, who named it Norumbega Heights. The main man of the three was apparently a Harry Nelson Mabery, from Massachusetts.
So maybe, Steve speculated, since Massachusetts is near Maine, perhaps Mabery vacationed in Maine and was familiar with the name and the legend.
Sounds like a pretty good guess to me.

January 31 at 11:49 a.m., an unknown male subject entered a business in the 900 block of W. Foothill and tried to make a purchase. The clerk recognized the subject as someone who has previously stolen merchandise from the business. The clerk told him he was not welcome. The subject then threatened the clerk by saying he would return and shoot the place up. At this time the male subject is unknown. Investigation continuing.
Battery/Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
January 31 at 2:27 p.m., a mother reported that her son battered her in the 400 block of E. Lemon. Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. The son was arrested for battery, and during the booking process, was found to be in possession of prescription medication that did not belong to him. Possession of a controlled substance was added to his charges.

February 1 at 8:28 a.m., an officer was dispatched on the report of a battery incident in the 300 block of W. Huntington. A male and female subject were arguing over parking in a business parking lot. The argument continued into a local business and the female swung her fist at the male. The male reacted by punching the female and knocking her down. Officers arrived and completed an investigation. The female subject was taken to a local hospital. A report was completed and sent to the District Attorney’s office.
Violation of Court Order/Resisting a Peace Officer – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 10:38 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of California and Cypress when he saw a known male subject riding a bicycle. The subject was in violation of a restraining order that prohibits him from being at the location. The officer confirmed the restraining order and initiated a traffic stop. The subject refused to stop until Cypress and Ivy and was uncooperative with the officer throughout the encounter. He was arrested for violation of the restraining order and resisting an officer.
Warrant/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 12:08 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 500 block of W. Colorado and saw a female subject commit a vehicle code violation at the intersection of Mayflower and Colorado. A traffic stop was conducted and the subject was found to have a warrant for her arrest. She was also found to be in possession of used syringes. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Grand Theft
February 1 at 2:24 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Duarte Road. The victim checked on the status of a phone delivery and discovered it was marked delivered to his residence. The victim said he never received the package. He called the delivery service and received conflicting statements as to what happened to his package. Investigation continuing.
Criminal Threats – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 4:58 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Highland called police to report his brother was intoxicated and had disabled the phone lines to the home. He also made threats inside the residence. Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. The brother was arrested for making criminal threats.
Special Traffic Enforcement
On February 1 during school hours, officers conducted special traffic enforcement at several schools. They issued both warnings and citations to drivers violating traffic laws in the school zone areas.

February 1 at 7:42 p.m., a caller reported a male subject climbing out of a donation bin in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle. Officers responded and made contact with the subject. The subject had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 1 at 8:48 p.m., multiple callers reported a traffic collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Royal Oaks and Mountain. One of the vehicles attempted to flee the scene of the accident and collided into a light pole down the street. Officers arrived and searched for the driver, but he was not found in the vehicle. Investigation continuing.
Robbery
February 1 at 10:52 p.m., a robbery was reported at a residence in the 300 block of W. Foothill. A group of female subjects were leaving a party and were confronted by a group of male subjects in a black Range Rover, who were also leaving the party. One of the females leaned into one of the vehicle windows and a male subject in the vehicle grabbed her phone. The vehicle was driven away and the victim sustained scrapes on her legs from falling on the asphalt. Officers arrived and searched for the suspect vehicle, but it was not located. The investigation is continuing.

February 2 at 2:08 a.m., a caller reported that a vehicle had collided into multiple parked cars and then pulled over and parked along the curb, near the intersection of Cypress and Magnolia. Officers arrived and checked the area. The driver was located a block away and was found to be intoxicated. Officers conducted an investigation, and the driver was arrested for DUI.

February 3 at 2:16 a.m., officers were patrolling the area of Peck and Live Oak when they saw a vehicle fail to stop at a red traffic signal. A traffic stop was conducted. The driver was intoxicated and an investigation for driving under the influence was conducted. The driver was arrested for DUI.
Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
February 3 at 3:21 a.m., a caller reported hearing a loud argument in the 700 block of W. Duarte. Officers arrived and made contact with a male and female subject who lived together. The female had scratched the male and left visible injuries. She was arrested and taken into custody.

February 3 at 7:18 a.m., a resident from the 800 block of E. Foothill reported that the mailboxes for his building were stolen sometime during the night. Officers arrived and began a theft report. Investigation continuing.
Traffic Collision – Vehicle vs. Pedestrian
February 3 at 9:35 a.m., a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the intersection of Fifth and Huntington. Officers arrived to investigate the collision and the pedestrian was transported to a hospital with injuries.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision/Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 4 at 1:07 p.m., a vehicle was reported near the area of Myrtle and Huntington being driven with two flat tires. A second caller reported being side-swiped by a vehicle that was not stopping. Officers arrived and located the vehicle near Myrtle and Palm. They initiated a traffic stop. A witness was able to positively identify the driver of the vehicle. An investigation was conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI.

February 4 at 7:05 a.m., the owner of a business in the 400 block of W. Maple discovered someone had burglarized his business over the weekend. The suspect shattered a window to gain entry. Investigation continuing.
Phone Scam/Fraudulent Kidnapping Call
February 4 at 12:47 p.m., a female subject reported she had just received a call from an unknown number while in the 800 block of S. Mountain. A male subject told her he kidnapped her daughter and was holding her for ransom, unless she paid him money. Officers found the 15-year-old daughter at home, and she knew nothing about the call. The call was found to have originated in another country and was a fraudulent scam to extort money from the family.

February 4 at 7:19 hours, a vehicle was stopped on Mountain, waiting to make a left turn onto Wildrose, when a second vehicle lost control due to water on the roadway and collided into the first vehicle. Officers responded to investigate the collision. There were no injuries.

February 4 at 10:39 p.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of Monterey and Huntington and saw a subject operating a motorcycle without license plates. The rider was also wearing a hard hat instead of a helmet. The officer initiated a traffic stop and discovered the rider did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his license and it was suspended. The rider also had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

February 5 at 6:56 a.m., a caller reported a vehicle that was parked awkwardly for over an hour in the 900 block of E. Huntington. Officers arrived and discovered two female subjects in the vehicle. When contacted, they said a male subject who was no longer there drove them to the location. One of the female subjects had a warrant for her arrest. She was arrested and taken into custody.

February 5 at 9:01 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Fifth and Huntington for an injury traffic accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. As the pedestrian was walking across the sidewalk, he was struck by a vehicle turning left. The driver didn't see him. Officers arrived to investigate the collision and the pedestrian was transported to the hospital with injuries.

February 5 at 10:07 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of Peppertree Lane reported that mail was stolen from mailboxes on the street. When the officer arrived, it was discovered that there were numerous possible victims. A mail tampering report was taken and the investigation is continuing.

February 5 at 9:40 p.m., officers on patrol near the intersection of California and Evergreen came upon a single vehicle accident. The vehicle struck the center divider while making a turn and collided with a pole. There were no injuries.

February 6 at 7:41 a.m., a resident in the 700 block of W. Olive reported her senior complex mailbox was either left open or someone had opened it sometime during the night using a key. The community mailbox contains all of the private mailboxes of the residents. Mail had been removed and was on the ground. It is unknown if any mail was actually taken. This investigation is continuing.

February 6 at 8:59 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of W. Lemon walked outside his home and discovered someone had burglarized his vehicle sometime during the night. One of the windows had been shattered and the interior was ransacked. The resident did not know what had been taken. This investigation is continuing.

February 6 at 1:02 p.m., officers noticed a suspicious person in the 500 block of W. Colorado. They made contact with the subject, and a consent search revealed the subject was in possession of heroin. The subject was arrested possession of heroin.

February 6 at 1:40 p.m., a caller reported a male subject was yelling at people in the 100 block of W. Foothill. Officers made contact with the subject and determined he was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. A computer check revealed he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. February 6 at 3:02 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. The victim parked and locked her vehicle, but forgot to take her purse. When she returned to her vehicle, the window was smashed and the purse was gone. This investigation is continuing.

February 6 at 5:02 p.m., a traffic collision was reported at Shamrock and Foothill. A white tractor trailer turned south on Shamrock from eastbound Foothill. As the trailer portion was completing the turn, it hit the light standard, knocking it down to the ground. The caller did not get a plate. It is unknown if the driver even knew what happened. Investigation continuing.

Battery/Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
January 31 at 2:27 p.m., a mother reported that her son battered her in the 400 block of E. Lemon. Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. The son was arrested for battery, and during the booking process, was found to be in possession of prescription medication that did not belong to him. Possession of a controlled substance was added to his charges.

February 1 at 8:28 a.m., an officer was dispatched on the report of a battery incident in the 300 block of W. Huntington. A male and female subject were arguing over parking in a business parking lot. The argument continued into a local business and the female swung her fist at the male. The male reacted by punching the female and knocking her down. Officers arrived and completed an investigation. The female subject was taken to a local hospital. A report was completed and sent to the District Attorney’s office.
Violation of Court Order/Resisting a Peace Officer – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 10:38 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of California and Cypress when he saw a known male subject riding a bicycle. The subject was in violation of a restraining order that prohibits him from being at the location. The officer confirmed the restraining order and initiated a traffic stop. The subject refused to stop until Cypress and Ivy and was uncooperative with the officer throughout the encounter. He was arrested for violation of the restraining order and resisting an officer.
Warrant/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 12:08 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 500 block of W. Colorado and saw a female subject commit a vehicle code violation at the intersection of Mayflower and Colorado. A traffic stop was conducted and the subject was found to have a warrant for her arrest. She was also found to be in possession of used syringes. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Grand Theft
February 1 at 2:24 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Duarte Road. The victim checked on the status of a phone delivery and discovered it was marked delivered to his residence. The victim said he never received the package. He called the delivery service and received conflicting statements as to what happened to his package. Investigation continuing.
Criminal Threats – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 4:58 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Highland called police to report his brother was intoxicated and had disabled the phone lines to the home. He also made threats inside the residence. Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. The brother was arrested for making criminal threats.
Special Traffic Enforcement
On February 1 during school hours, officers conducted special traffic enforcement at several schools. They issued both warnings and citations to drivers violating traffic laws in the school zone areas.
Warrant – Suspect Arrested
February 1 at 7:42 p.m., a caller reported a male subject climbing out of a donation bin in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle. Officers responded and made contact with the subject. The subject had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision
February 1 at 8:48 p.m., multiple callers reported a traffic collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Royal Oaks and Mountain. One of the vehicles attempted to flee the scene of the accident and collided into a light pole down the street. Officers arrived and searched for the driver, but he was not found in the vehicle. Investigation continuing.
Robbery
February 1 at 10:52 p.m., a robbery was reported at a residence in the 300 block of W. Foothill. A group of female subjects were leaving a party and were confronted by a group of male subjects in a black Range Rover, who were also leaving the party. One of the females leaned into one of the vehicle windows and a male subject in the vehicle grabbed her phone. The vehicle was driven away and the victim sustained scrapes on her legs from falling on the asphalt. Officers arrived and searched for the suspect vehicle, but it was not located. The investigation is continuing.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision/ Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 2 at 2:08 a.m., a caller reported that a vehicle had collided into multiple parked cars and then pulled over and parked along the curb, near the intersection of Cypress and Magnolia. Officers arrived and checked the area. The driver was located a block away and was found to be intoxicated. Officers conducted an investigation, and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Driving Under the Influence – Driver Arrested
February 3 at 2:16 a.m., officers were patrolling the area of Peck and Live Oak when they saw a vehicle fail to stop at a red traffic signal. A traffic stop was conducted. The driver was intoxicated and an investigation for driving under the influence was conducted. The driver was arrested for DUI.
Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
February 3 at 3:21 a.m., a caller reported hearing a loud argument in the 700 block of W. Duarte. Officers arrived and made contact with a male and female subject who lived together. The female had scratched the male and left visible injuries. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Theft
February 3 at 7:18 a.m., a resident from the 800 block of E. Foothill reported that the mailboxes for his building were stolen sometime during the night. Officers arrived and began a theft report. Investigation continuing.
Traffic Collision – Vehicle vs. Pedestrian
February 3 at 9:35 a.m., a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the intersection of Fifth and Huntington. Officers arrived to investigate the collision and the pedestrian was transported to a hospital with injuries.
Hit & Run Traffic Collision/Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
February 4 at 1:07 p.m., a vehicle was reported near the area of Myrtle and Huntington being driven with two flat tires. A second caller reported being side-swiped by a vehicle that was not stopping. Officers arrived and located the vehicle near Myrtle and Palm. They initiated a traffic stop. A witness was able to positively identify the driver of the vehicle. An investigation was conducted and the driver was arrested for DUI.
Commercial Burglary
February 4 at 7:05 a.m., the owner of a business in the 400 block of W. Maple discovered someone had burglarized his business over the weekend. The suspect shattered a window to gain entry. Investigation continuing.
Phone Scam/Fraudulent Kidnapping Call
February 4 at 12:47 p.m., a female subject reported she had just received a call from an unknown number while in the 800 block of S. Mountain. A male subject told her he kidnapped her daughter and was holding her for ransom, unless she paid him money. Officers found the 15-year-old daughter at home, and she knew nothing about the call. The call was found to have originated in another country and was a fraudulent scam to extort money from the family.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 4 at 7:19 hours, a vehicle was stopped on Mountain, waiting to make a left turn onto Wildrose, when a second vehicle lost control due to water on the roadway and collided into the first vehicle. Officers responded to investigate the collision. There were no injuries.
Vehicle Code Violations/Warrants – Suspect Arrested
February 4 at 10:39 p.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of Monterey and Huntington and saw a subject operating a motorcycle without license plates. The rider was also wearing a hard hat instead of a helmet. The officer initiated a traffic stop and discovered the rider did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his license and it was suspended. The rider also had multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Warrant – Suspect Arrest
February 5 at 6:56 a.m., a caller reported a vehicle that was parked awkwardly for over an hour in the 900 block of E. Huntington. Officers arrived and discovered two female subjects in the vehicle. When contacted, they said a male subject who was no longer there drove them to the location. One of the female subjects had a warrant for her arrest. She was arrested and taken into custody.
Injury Traffic Collision
February 5 at 9:01 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Fifth and Huntington for an injury traffic accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. As the pedestrian was walking across the sidewalk, he was struck by a vehicle turning left. The driver didn't see him. Officers arrived to investigate the collision and the pedestrian was transported to the hospital with injuries.
Mail Tampering
February 5 at 10:07 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of Peppertree Lane reported that mail was stolen from mailboxes on the street. When the officer arrived, it was discovered that there were numerous possible victims. A mail tampering report was taken and the investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 5 at 9:40 p.m., officers on patrol near the intersection of California and Evergreen came upon a single vehicle accident. The vehicle struck the center divider while making a turn and collided with a pole. There were no injuries.

February 6 at 7:41 a.m., a resident in the 700 block of W. Olive reported her senior complex mailbox was either left open or someone had opened it sometime during the night using a key. The community mailbox contains all of the private mailboxes of the residents. Mail had been removed and was on the ground. It is unknown if any mail was actually taken. This investigation is continuing.
Vehicle Burglary
February 6 at 8:59 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of W. Lemon walked outside his home and discovered someone had burglarized his vehicle sometime during the night. One of the windows had been shattered and the interior was ransacked. The resident did not know what had been taken. This investigation is continuing.
Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
February 6 at 1:02 p.m., officers noticed a suspicious person in the 500 block of W. Colorado. They made contact with the subject, and a consent search revealed the subject was in possession of heroin. The subject was arrested possession of heroin.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
February 6 at 1:40 p.m., a caller reported a male subject was yelling at people in the 100 block of W. Foothill. Officers made contact with the subject and determined he was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. A computer check revealed he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Vehicle Burglary
February 6 at 3:02 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. The victim parked and locked her vehicle, but forgot to take her purse. When she returned to her vehicle, the window was smashed and the purse was gone. This investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
February 6 at 5:02 p.m., a traffic collision was reported at Shamrock and Foothill. A white tractor trailer turned south on Shamrock from eastbound Foothill. As the trailer portion was completing the turn, it hit the light standard, knocking it down to the ground. The caller did not get a plate. It is unknown if the driver even knew what happened. Investigation continuing.

~ Monrovia "will be exploring the option of putting a sales tax measure on the ballot for our residents to consider in 2019." Why? Because, Chi said, "if Monrovia doesn't tax itself to the maximum permitted (10.25%), the LA County will tax to the max, and in that case the new taxes would all go to the county and Monrovia would only get a bit of that back. Chi writes: "Those cities that have reached the 10.25% cap do not pay for additional LA County taxes, but are still able to receive the funds collected." For example, he said, Santa Monica and Long Beach do not pay anything for Measure H homelessness tax because they already have a 10.25% sales tax rate, but they do receive Measure H money - paid for by everybody else in the county.
~ The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board has given conditional approval for Monrovia's Revised Enhanced Watershed Management Program (EWMP). (That's filtering our runoff water.) Chi writes: "Our original EWMP plan was slated to cost around $1.4 billion (yes... BILLION) to implement." Now it's down to $122 million, still a bucket-load of money, but, he adds, Monrovia should get $32.1 million a year in Measure W grant money for the projects.

~ The 18th annual Mosaic Arts International Exhibition Series has selected the Bob Bartlett Memorial at Station Square as one of 19 architectural and site-specific mosaics from around the world to be recognized. Renderings of the mosaic art-work will be on display in Nashville, TN, from January 26 - May 19.
~ Foothill Unity Center will host an open-to-the-public reception to honor Betty Sandford for her contributions to Monrovia. Reception on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Foothill Unity Center facility at 790 W. Chestnut Ave.
~ Monrovia has been working with the Monrovia Youth Baseball League on baseball field improvements at Recreation Park. Painting, maintenance on the scoreboard, work on the infield, working on an outfield fence and figuring out how to install a new batting cage.

New Monrovia Brewery Holding Grand Opening
Monrovia has yet another micro-brewery, Wingwalker Brewing (celebrating "the Daredevil Barnstormers of the past and the Spirit of Adventure that drove them."). The new brewery will hold its grand opening this Saturday, Feb. 9, with food trucks, beer and rock and roll by The Freedom Ledges. Jynx Would Love to Have a Cat Playmate
Jynx (A471061) is one beautiful cat! He’s a 5-year-old who was surrendered to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA in mid-January and was pretty shy. We thought he might come out of his shell if he was in one of our cat communal rooms, and be able to interact with other cats. Jynx is now doing so much better. He even has a best friend, Ralphie (A471298), a 2-year-old red tabby. They get along great except when Ralphie tries to eat Jynx’s treats. Jynx is also very sweet to people, and likes to be petted around his ears. He’ll even head bump and purr for more human affection. Because Jynx seems to like other cats, just as much as people, we recommend Jynx going to a home that already has a cat so he will have a guaranteed play mate.
The adoption fee for cats is $90. All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before being adopted.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.
