Dedication of Historic Santa Fe Depot and Bartlett Memorial
The community is invited to attend the City of Monrovia's dedication event in recognition of the restoration of the Historic Santa Fe Depot and the christening of the Mayor Bob Bartlett Memorial. The event will take place at Station Square (1629 S. Myrtle Ave.) on Sunday, Feb. 25, starting at noon.
During the past year, the City has, in partnership with the development team at Daylight Limited, LLC, been working to carefully rehabilitate the Historic Santa Fe Depot, which is one of the most historically significant structures in Monrovia. The building, which was originally built in 1926, has been formally identified as the City's 137th landmarked building. "It is a community treasure whose history is completely intertwined with the development of the City of Monrovia," said Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Crudgington. Staying true to its original Spanish Colonial Revival Style, the efforts to restore the facility is now complete, and efforts are underway to find a restaurant operator for the rehabilitated space.
Additionally, Station Square will also house the new Mayor Bob Bartlett Memorial. Led by Mayor Tom Adams and City Council Member Larry Spicer, the Bob Bartlett Memorial Committee was established in October 2015, and for the past two years, the committee has worked to determine how best to commemorate and honor former Monrovia Mayor Bob Bartlett. Mayor Bartlett was elected as the first African American to serve on the Monrovia City Council in 1974. Later, in 1988, he was elected Mayor and served in that position through 2001. During his tenure, Mayor Bartlett presided over many community enhancements, including the revitalization of Old Town, the development of the Huntington Oaks Shopping Center, establishment of the Community Center, and developing the High Tech Corridor on East Huntington Drive. Given his service to Monrovia, the City Council commissioned the establishment of a mosaic art piece that would honor Mayor Bartlett's legacy.
To celebrate the restoration of the Historic Santa Fe Depot, along with the installation of the Mayor Bob Bartlett Memorial, the City hopes that you can attend this special occasion celebrating the newest additions to Station Square. The event is completely free to the public, and parking will be available at the Station Square Park-and-Ride parking lot on the southwest corner of Myrtle Avenue and Pomona Avenue. For more information, please call 932-5512.

The Monrovia City Council is going to hold a study session to consider regulations for tattoo parlors in Old Town. That'll be at 5:30 on Feb. 20 at City Hall. https://goo.gl/Rf6ssG
Then, at its regular 7:30 p.m. meeting later that evening (agenda: https://goo.gl/Xq5tn5), the council will ...
~ Recognize Hannah Honore, California Rainbow for Girls Grand Patriotism Officer, and Eagle Scout Zachary Stegman.
~ Consider paying Pyro Spectaculars $22,500 to put on a Fourth of July fireworks show (they shows are great, by the way).
~ Consider approving the proposed GoMonrovia plan, which incorporates subsidized 50-cent rides in Lyft cars (like Uber), and LimeBike, which would provide bicycles around town that can be picked up, ridden, then left pretty much anywhere in town, not just in docking stations, like the Metro Bikes. It would cost a buck for the first 30 minutes on a bike. https://goo.gl/WE2wJn

Renaissance Years Now Available as E-Book
An e-book edition of Renaissance Years: A History of Modern Monrovia is now available for purchase from the Kindle Store at Amazon.com.
The book by former journalist and city public information officer Richard Singer tells the story of Monrovia’s transformation from a racially troubled and economically failing city in the 1960s and ‘70s to an award-winning, nationally recognized model community. The work covers the entire history of the city, from its beginnings in the late 1880s to events of just a few months ago.
The new electronic version is a third edition of the book, which was first published in September of last year. The e-book is a stripped-down version of the original work (without the earlier editions’ index, reference citations or 120 photographs) and is being sold at a significant discount from the printed work. It can be easily downloaded and read on e-book readers, tablets and smart phones.
Some first edition copies of the book, printed in a limited run, are still available locally, with the total purchase price from those sales going to support both the Monrovia Historical Museum and the historic Anderson House museum. Remaining first edition copies may be purchased at the Monrovia Historical Museum at Recreation Park, at the Dollmakers shop in Old Town, at the Friends of the Library store inside the Monrovia Public Library, and at Second Baptist Church.
Online, both the printed and e-book versions of Renaissance Years may be purchased from Amazon.com.

Safe Place To Make Exchanges of Internet Purchases
Opinion: This is an interesting, simple and seemingly useful idea for people making person-to-person exchanges of items bought or sold over the internet.
The police department In our neighboring community of Arcadia is designating a part of its parking lot that is under video surveillance as a safe spot to make such exchanges. https://goo.gl/CKPwj4
I hope Monrovia keeps an eye on this experiment and will consider implementing a similar program if it proves successful.

Monrovia School Enrollment Continues to Drop, Fewer Teachers Needed
Monrovia school enrollment "is at its lowest level since at least 1992," and is expected to drop by 116 more students, to 5,449, for the 2018-19 year, compared to its high point of 6,762 in 1999, and this means that with fewer students, there will be 11.7 fewer school staff members next year.
According to this report and these tables, which the school board will receive at its Feb. 14 meeting (agenda), the only elementary schools showing an enrollment increase are Monroe and Plymouth. Monroe "increased 3.66% this year, and has increased 19.01% compared to 2013-14, mainly due to the Spanish Dual Immersion program that is now in its eighth year. Plymouth also increased 11.39% this year due to the Mandarin Dual Immersion program." Also, Clifton Middle School has increased its enrollment 1.34% since 2013.

Lunch at Chicken King
Got lunch to go at Chicken King Express yesterday, in the little shopping area at Foothill and Mayflower. I had the Chicken Tarator with hummus and pickles (or you can get rice instead of pickles) for $9.95. I’d never had it before. It’s a cold dish and very good - and a lot of it. I’d look at the menu online and call it in to save some time. Here’s the website (https://goo.gl/6VW3mC) and here’s the phone: 305-3111.

Large Building Projects Planned for Monrovia; Public Safety Initiative; Santa Fe Depot/Bartlet Mosaic Dedication; Etc.
In his weekly report, City Manager Oliver Chi reports ...
~ City staff anticipates there will likely be three large-scale projects planned for Monrovia. They are:
1. Marriott TownePlace Suites - A 113 room hotel at the southwest corner of Huntington and Myrtle.
2. Richman Residential - A 294 unit multi-family project located at the northest corner of Duarte Road and Magnolia, just south of the Gold Line Station.
3. AvalonBay Residential - A 154 unit multi-family project located at the northwest corner of Myrtle and Chestnut.
~ The California Public Safety Partnership Issues Committee has begun circulating a proposed initiative called the Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act. (Monrovia has been a leader in trying to get modifications in state law to reduce crime.)
The initiative would reclassify currently "non-violent" crimes - like rape of an unconscious person, sex trafficking of a child and 14 other serious crimes - as "violent" to prevent the early release of inmates convicted of these crimes. It would also stop the early release of violent felons, expand parolee oversight, strengthen penalties for parole violations, reform theft laws to restore accountability for serial thieves and organized theft gangs, expand DNA collection to include those convicted of drug, theft, domestic violence and other serious crimes to help solve rape, murder and other violent crimes - and to exonerate those wrongly accused.
Assemblymember Chris Holden will host a public safety meeting to discuss these issues at the Monrovia Community Center on Thursday, March 1, starting at 5:30 p.m.
~ The city is planning a dual dedication event for the unveiling of the Mayor Bob Bartlett Mosaic and the Historic Santa Fe Depot on Sunday, Feb. 25. A light lunch will be served h at noon, with the formal program set to begin at 1 p.m. Details to come.
~ Monrovia Area Partnership will host a block party on March 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church (925 S. Shamrock Ave.).
~ In January, 290 Monrovians participating in the Winter Reading Challenge surpassed their goal, reading 144,237 minutes in the month of January.
~ Assemblymember Chris Holden is looking for women to honor whose service have made a positive impact in the 41st Assembly District. Nomination deadline is Feb. 16.
