This week, a Monrovia resident called police to report a telephone scam where they received a recorded phone call from a suspect claiming to represent the Department of the United States Treasury. The suspect stated the call was concerning tax fraud and gave the resident a hotline phone number to call. The suspect said the resident would be facing litigation and would be arrested and put in jail if they did not respond to the call. The resident did not return the phone call. They recognized the call was a fraudulent telephone scam and reported the incident to police. Legitimate businesses and government agencies will not ask you for personal information over the phone. The Monrovia Police Department would like to remind the public not to respond to these telephone scams and to never give out personal information over the telephone.
