Monrovia Congresswoman Judy Chu Pushing to Expand National Monument Area in San Gabriel Mountains

Congresswoman Judy Chu, who represents Monrovia, has just announced on Twitter that:

"I'm about to introduce a bill to expand the San Gabriel National Monument and create a new National Recreation Area."

Chu had earlier pushed for the San Gabriel Mountains -including part of Monrovia - to be designated as a National Recreation Area. The Monrovia City Council opposed that measure and the proposal did not advance in Congress. Then, she asked President Obama to declare part of the San Gabriel Mountains to be a National Monument, an approach which did not require approval of Congress. Mr. Obama did that.

  1. I only hope that they take over our wilderness preserve. Maybe we'll finally be able to access it.

    1. As long as the current mayor's friends consider it their private backyard, the only connection non-goodoldboy Monrovians will have is their so-called "ownership" -- meaning we'll continue to pay the taxes and Adam's friends will continue to enjoy the benefits. It was Adams who fought the recreation area idea a few years ago and used it to smear his opponent. He'll no doubt oppose it again claiming the feds are trying to take over the town, his usual right-wing rant. Political philosophies aside, though, it's still Adams and his friends who have "taken over" the preserve.

    2. Assemblyman Adams never opposed Judy Judy's recreation area. Mayor Adams does NOT oppose it today. Mayor Adams and his friend have NOT 'taken over' the preserve. Please educate and introduce yourself to your neighbors Mr Anonymous October 23, 2015 at 1:53 PM.

    3. Assemblyman Adams? Getting ahead of yourself aren't you Dan? Read the story - "Chu had earlier pushed for the San Gabriel Mountains -including part of Monrovia - to be designated as a National Recreation Area. The Monrovia City Council opposed that measure." Adams led the opposition and accused Mayor Lutz of trying to "give away" the foothills to the feds. It was a major theme of his ugly campaign. Are you suggesting that he's going to support it now?

    4. I suggest nothing here excepting this historic fact ... Tom Adams has never voiced opposition to Judy Judy's Mountain Playground. I have reason to believe that remains the same today.

    5. Dan. The people who are most fiercely keeping the preserve closed ARE great friends with Adams and supporters of his campaigns. Also.. http://www.latimes.com/science/la-me-0826-monument-20140826-story.html

    6. The topic of this story is Chu and her mountain play ground. Neither Tom Adams , his friends nor a delay of the opening of the gates to Monrovia's Wilderness Preserve are involved in this story.
However ... illegal passage/access is a connection these two stories share. Our City Council is protecting the property rights of property. owners in each instance as well. I am in full support on each issue.

  2. There are more urgent things to worry about than this. What is she doing in congress besides worrying about our mountains?

  3. Like what? What urgent thing should they be working on? You want more laws written?
