Monrovia Schools Issues Measles Warning
Below you will find information and steps to help protect yourselves and our students.
- Measles is highly contagious. A person can spread the disease to others before experiencing symptoms, which include fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a rash that starts on the face and body and which typically appears 10 to 21 days after the exposure.
- Most people who have not been immunized risk getting the disease if they have contact with the virus.
- About 90 percent of people who have never been immunized become ill seven to 21 days after exposure. The disease can be spread from one person to another before the rash appears.

Recalling Successes During This School Year
Monrovia Schools Superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian recalls successes throughout this school year:
This school year, Monrovia Unified students have excelled in District programs such as Code to the Future, robotics, performing arts, and so much more. With summer fast approaching, our students are immersing themselves into end-of-the-year projects and performances and are excited to share these with our community.
In April, we celebrated the performing arts when 50 students from Wild Rose School of Creative Arts performed their spring production of Disney's "Lion King Kids Jr." On April 29, students traveled to the Ahmanson Theatre to perform as part of the Disney Musicals in Schools grant, ending their 17-week training course with theater professionals.
On April 18, the District's five elementary schools came together to participate in the second annual Next Generation Math Bee, with the Mayflower Mariners claiming the top prize. The event nurtured mathematical skills in our students.
At the middle-school level, Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School held a device rollout, distributing Chromebooks to all students. Additionally, sixth-grade students learned about brain and lung specimens on April 23 during a crash course with Sonia Maljian, director of laboratory services at Methodist Hospital.
Finally, congratulations to our robotics teams from Clifton Middle School and Monrovia High School, who competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Houston, Texas. They worked so to achieve this highest level of competition.

Monrovian Michael Clearman Dies Following Motorcycle Accident
Monrovian Michael Clearman died today, May 9, 2019, in Scottsdale, Arizona, following a motorcycle accident. His friend, Nancy Bond, wrote this tribute:
Michael Clearman was an incredible person. He was an Attorney. A pilot who was building his own airplane. He was the president of his EAA aeronautical club. Flying brought him great joy! He gave hundreds of airplane rides to youngsters in a program called the Young Eagles. He was a sailor. He rode motorcycles his whole life. Was about to be the President of the Kiwanis Club. He served on the Board of the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce. He was in BNI, a business networking group, and was also on the Supervisory Committee of the Southern California Edison Federal Credit Union, which means he went to monthly meetings and helped make sure that the money was safe for every member of the credit union. His degree from college was in finance.
His heart was big and generous and he loved sharing his life and fun with his friends and colleagues. Plus, he hiked, biked and walked with his buddies most mornings. HE WILL BE MISSED!

County Wants to Get Debris Catcher Off It’s Hands
In his latest report (https://is.gd/JGORRp) City Manager Oliver Chi reports:
~ LA County is done with the debris catcher it instalked at the top end of Highland Place after the Madison Fire to catch debris in case of a flood, and it wants to either remove it or hand it over to Monrovia. Monrovia is evaluating the proposal.
~ Public Works has re-seeded the grass around the band shell at Station Square Park, which has become a bit ratty. It oughta look fine by the start of summer park events.
~ The city Code Enforcement team has been working with a family on Orange Avenue to resolve a code violation related to a large storage container in the front driveway. City staff asked the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley for help. The center sent volunteers to help the property owner move the contents of the container To a backyard shed.
~ During the past year the Veterans Resource Center (in the Library) has helped 1,920 veterans and their family members connect with services and resources.

This Kitty Is a Ray of Sunshine
Sunshine (A475686) is a ray of, well, sunshine! This 5-year-old beauty tends to stay at the back of her kennel. She’s probably a little confused about all of the meowing as she was only found stray in Pasadena a few days ago and brought to Pasadena Humane. When you pet the top of her head she immediately melts from reserved to affectionate. She rolls on her side and back happily, and invites chin scratches and full body pets. She’s a sweet girl who is more interested in you than she is treats or toys. She’s looking for a home with affectionate people and a reprieve from the shelter stay.
The adoption fee for cats is $90. All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before being adopted.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.
View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org. Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.
*** It’s all the excitement of a summer music festival with a name to match (but a lot more cats) — it’s Catapalooza! Come on down to the Pasadena Humane Society on Saturday, May 18th and Sunday, May 19th for a FREE cat adoption weekend! Thanks to the Pet Care Foundation all adoption fees for cats are covered, and include the spay and neuter, microchip, and vaccines. Much like a music festival, you can check out the “lineup” (adoptable cats) in advance at pasadenahumane.org/pets.

Monrovia's Population Is ... Down!
According to the Community Development Department's "Over the Counter" blog, the latest stats show Monrovia's population has ... decreased.
By 0.1 percent. LA County's population has also gone down a bit, though the state's population is up 0.5 percent. https://is.gd/fkwuEu
Comment: Hmm. Hard to fathom. I hadn't noticed homes getting emptier, and all those new multi-unit developments next to the train station. Maybe its that the kids are moving out of town since they can't afford to live here anymore.

Hotel Planned for Myrtle Next to Train Station? Sales Tax Study; Air Strippers
Before its Tuesday, May 7 meeting (https://is.gd/JmZwEG) the Monrovia City Council will ...
~ Hold a 5 p.m. session to study a possible sales tax for Monrovia. (Max out our sales tax so Monrovia gets to keep the money instead of letting the county max it out and letting it get the money.) https://is.gd/miABrM
~ Hold a 5:45 p.m. closed session (https://is.gd/c31KBJ) about the three properties on the west side of Myrtle just north of the train station. The report indicates that Hotels International (Is that actually "Choice Hotels International"?) is interested in the properties.
~ In the same closed session discuss price and terms of the property at 347 Highland Place, a residential property up next to the Wilderness Area.
~ In a second study session at 6:45 p.m. discuss "2019-2020 City Council Appointments."
~ Then -- we're finally getting to the regular 7:30 p.m. meeting -- consider awarding a $343,240 contract to RC Foster Corporation to rehab Air Stripper Towers 1 & 2. These devices use air to strip contaminants out of our water supply. https://is.gd/27U85E
