Dinner at 1776

Dinner at 1776, on the east side of Myrtle just south of Lemon  I’d heard burgers are no longer on the menu. Yup! They are indeed gone. Got the Cuban Sliders for $10 and a beer for $7. My sliders look a bit different, but I guess that’s because they’re Cuban style. Other sliders look like mini- burgers. Anyway, it tasted fine.

Some Parents Upset at Audition Process for the Musical Play, 'Annie'

A number of parents whose children attempted to audition for the musical Annie are upset at what they feel was either an unfair or badly communicated message about the audition process.

Katie Datko posted on Facebook that her daughter was not given a chance to audition for the play, which will be held at the Taylor Performing Arts Center (aka Monrovia High auditorium), because she had prepared to sing rather than to dance. Other parents echoed similar concerns.

Some felt the flyer, above, which was passed out to students at school, was unclear.

School Board Member Ed Gilliland entered the discussion to answer a number of concerns. He wrote:

"The performing arts center is a part of MHS and first priority is MHS functions including drama productions. The Community Theatre is overseen by Patrick Garcia a School District employee who is tasked with providing opportunities for MUSD students to be involved in the arts at all grade levels. Neither the MHS productions or the community theatre “pay” to use the performing arts center, but the School Board does expect the community theatre to be self sufficient including the cost of a few professionals in several different capacities, thus allowing students and community members to work alongside  professionals. Outside groups such as Center Stage can rent the performing arts center for productions when it is available."

Street Vendors Given Okay to Operate Virtually Anywhere; K-Rail Coming Down; Old Town Logo Gets New Date

In his latest report (https://goo.gl/aOqX7O) City Manager Oliver Chi reports:

~ For the most part, Monrovia - and other California cities - will no longer be able to regulate street vendors. Chi writes: "Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 946 (dubbed the Safe Sidewalk Vending Act) into law, which forbids cities the ability to outlaw sidewalk vendors.  While the new State regulation does provide cities with limited opportunities to permit street vending operations, the new law specifically mandates that municipalities cannot limit where, when, or how street vendors operate.

"In particular, the new law identifies that cities cannot ban vending in parks, cannot determine where vendors can operate, and are not required to ask permission from adjacent businesses in order to operate."

~ The city is planning to start removing much of the "K-Rail," those long concrete barriers along the sides of the road that were installed following the fire hillside fire, in October or November, except that the rail along Highland Place is going to stay. The city wants to wait until after the rainy season to decide what to do about Highland.

~ The proposed Old Town Logo, which initially said, "Founded 1887" has been revised to say, "Est. 1886." That's because the city was incorporated in 1887 but was initially established in 1886, according to City Historian Steve Baker.

Monrovia Council: Parking Rules for RVs; Buying Properties on Myrtle; Old Town Logo; Historic Landmarks

At its Tuesday meeting (https://goo.gl/7fHyrP) the Monrovia City Council will ...

~ Consider a) allowing residents to park overnight on the street without a permit in the area south of Huntington Drive, north of the 210 Freeway, and between Primrose Avenue and Shamrock Avenue, and b) allow RV street parking in the city by permit only. Permit would cost $5 a day for three days and non-residents could only park on the streets a maximum of six days per month. https://goo.gl/n4S1dt

~ Discuss a buying price for three properties on the west side of Myrtle just south of Primrose Pomona, just south of the property at the southwest corner of Myrtle and Primrose Pomona. This'll be considered in a 6 p.m. closed session meeting. https://goo.gl/uvr5Dz

~ Consider a special tax on the new Richman Residential Project - next to the train station - to pay for city services. https://goo.gl/4hLF52

~ Consider adopting the logo above for promotional efforts for Old Town. https://goo.gl/2LwUmg

~ Consider designating the house at 1 Hidden Valley Road and the house at 310 East Lemon as historic landmarks. https://goo.gl/RxcNNY and https://goo.gl/RxcNNY

Why is Hwy Esplanade a Highway?

When I saw this sign recently I again wondered why a street that is only three blocks long is called "Highway?"

So I asked Steve Baker, Monrovia's city historian, who said that the street was named by JE MacIntire (I'm unsure of spelling), the developer of the area north of what is now Huntington to Chestnut, and bordered on the west by what is now Monterey and on the east by Mayflower.

For some reason MacIntire called the development the "Highway Block," I guess maybe because it was near Huntington (called Falling Leaf at the time). But anyway, the "Hwy" part of Hwy Esplanade refers to the name of that part of town and is not a description of the street.

Monrovia has - for the second year in a row - been named one of five finalists competing to be Los Angeles County’s most business friendly city in the under-50,000 population category. Our near neighbors, Duarte and Azusa are also finalists. https://goo.gl/s4FMhY

Thanks for the tip, Brad Hori!
