Groundbreaking Ceremony Feb. 9 For Santa Fe Train Depot Rehab

The City of Monrovia will host a public groundbreaking event to celebrate the rehabilitation of the Historic Santa Fe Depot on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m., at Station Square (1629 S. Myrtle Ave., CA 91016).

The Historic Santa Fe Depot is arguably one of the most historically significant buildings in Monrovia.  Originally built in 1926, the facility was designed by architect William A. Mohr from Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and was constructed at a cost of $30,000 as a combination depot that combined rail passenger and freight functions into a single building.  With a booming citrus industry and increased settlers in the City, the Depot served Monrovia until it closed on May 12, 1972, with the decline of rail transportation and citrus freight traffic.

After sitting dormant and dilapidated for over four decades, the Monrovia City Council was able to secure the funding needed to rehabilitate the Depot in late 2015.  In addition, given the significance of the facility, on April 19, 2016, the City Council also approved the Depot as the 137th historical landmark designated in Monrovia.

Working in partnership with the Monrovia Historic Preservation Commission and the development team at Daylight Limited, LLC, the rehabilitation efforts to restore the Depot have begun.  Construction is anticipated to be completed by Summer 2017, and to celebrate the start of this significant initiative, the City hopes that you can join the community for a special groundbreaking ceremony. The event is completely free to the public, and parking will be available in the Station Square Park-and-Ride parking lot on the southwest corner of Myrtle Avenue and Pomona Avenue. Also, due to the construction, we do advise all those who are attending to wear flat, closed-toe shoes. For more information, please call 932-5512.

Monrovia Police Join 'Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk' Campaign

Football fans across the country will tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 5, and for many, the event often includes alcohol. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Monrovia Police Department are teaming up with law enforcement across the state for a special Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign to urge all football fans to call the right play on Super Bowl weekend and pass the keys to a sober driver before the drinking begins.

Monrovia Police Department will deploy additional officers on special DUI saturation patrols, specifically to stop and arrest drivers showing signs of alcohol or drug impairment during and following the game. As part of the Super Bowl Sunday enforcement efforts, police, sheriffs and the CHP will be on heightened alert, ready to stop and arrest any impaired driver.

Impaired driving can be deadly. A driver is considered alcohol-impaired with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, but even a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times enough to make driving unsafe. Drugs, such as many prescription medications, marijuana or illicit drugs, can also lead to impairment and unsafe driving, leading to a DUI.

“Fans that are impaired can secure a safe ride home by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or calling a taxi or rideshare program,” said Chief Hunt, Monrovia Police Department.

“Volunteer to be a designated driver to help your family and friends get home safely,” said OTS Director Rhonda Craft. “Impaired driving only leads to disaster and tragedy. It is never worth the risk. If you do plan to drink, and/or are taking medications or using marijuana, plan now to pass the keys to a sober driver before kickoff.”

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb. For those who plan to drive, refrain from any alcohol and be aware of possible drug impairment. Instead, enjoy the game with food and non-alcoholic drinks. This Super Bowl weekend, be a team player and help keep impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel. And remember: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, who reminds everyone to be alert and ‘Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911’ and if you see a dangerous driver, call immediately!

The auditor says: "In our opinion, the financial statements refened to above present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities, business-type activities..." etc.

~ The board will honor Monrovia's California League of Schools Educators of the Year: Paul Dols, MHS; Chad Miller, Santa Fe; and Katie Woodrick, Clifton.
