Paprika Is a People-Pleaser With Nearly Perfect Manners

Paprika is a sweet, people-loving dog who thrives on cuddles. This two-year-old shepherd mix happily greets every person she meets with a wagging tail and near-perfect manners.

She’s an active girl who enjoys walks and is learning to take time to smell the roses. She especially loves taking a break to roll in soft grass.

Paprika is also a ton of fun and very intelligent, too! She loves chewing on toys and playing fetch with them. She enjoys treats and takes them ever so gently from your hand, she wants to please her people so much!

Paprika is also an exceptionally quiet dog. She looks out the window with interest at dogs and people passing by, but she doesn’t bark. However, a home where she’s the only dog might be best.

Paprika is a perfect choice for someone who wants a young, active dog who also loves to snuggle.

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. For those who prefer, adoption appointments are available daily from 10:30 – 1:30, and can be scheduled online. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

2,700 More Images Added to Monrovia Historical Society Online Digital Archive

William Monroe (on train) working on Alaska railroad.

More than 2,700 historic images were added this June to Monrovia's Legacy Project, the Monrovia Historical Society's online digital record of photographs and papers from the city's early years.

The new items have been grouped in a dozen collections listed under "What's New?" on the Welcome page, (cityofmonrovia.pastperfectonline.com/). Click on each title for a short description, suggested searches and special treasures.

With City Historian Steve Baker’s passing in 2022, dozens more boxes worth of historical materials were discovered in his homes. Everything from maps and ledgers to scrapbooks and rare photos. With support from the city, “Monrovia Legacy Project 2.0” began last summer, led again by Sandy Burud of the Monrovia Historical Society with help from volunteers. The first year of that effort to organize, identify, scan, archive and add them to the online collection is now complete.

Among new items are images of the Monroe Cottage that William and Mary Jane Monroe built before their palatial home, The Oaks, photos of William in Alaska — where he built a railroad after founding Monrovia, Wildcats newsletters from the 1930s, bios of early families, Steve Baker’s speeches and writings, insurance maps with building details in 1888, more Monrovia Days parades, E.B. Gray photographs of the San Gabriel canyons, Julius Parker’s scrapbook from WWII, the story behind the Sanatorium Wars in the 1920s, and many others.

The work is far from complete. When finished, the archive should have more than 7,000 images. Year Two is now underway, with more treasures to be documented. If you’d like to help or if you have historic photos or papers to add, please email the Monrovia Historical Society at monroviahistoricalsociety1896@gmail.com or text/call 675.8323.

A Moment in Monrovia History: Mills Hotel - First Commercial Building in Monrovia

Built by John C. Anderson, this was the first commercial building in Monrovia, serving visitors who came to Monrovia to consider locating here. It was located at 510-512 Myrtle, shown in the 1888 tax rolls as owned by Presley Baker, who would have bought it from someone else. On the left is the addition to the original Hotel building. It was later managed by C.C. Hotchkiss, uncle of Myron Hotchkiss, later City Historian. The Hotel (also called the Mills Hotel, Wisteria Hotel) was the site of the election to incorporate the City of Monrovia in 1886. Little Homer Hull was killed by a flying hitching post caused when a horse was frightened and bolted; he was taken into the Hotel and died from his injuries. From the Myron Hotchkiss collection. Mini-Husky Reese Would Like a Quiet Home

Reese is a fun guy who has been flying under the radar at Pasadena Humane for too long! This handsome three-year-old husky is ready for his time to shine.

Reese was initially very nervous at the shelter and would sometimes hide in the back of his kennel. Thankfully, he has come out of his shell a bit and is now very happy to see the volunteers who take him out for exercise. He walks along by their sides, tail happily wagging as he prances along.

Reese weighs about 45 pounds, so he is smaller than an average husky. He packs a lot of fun and entertainment into his petite body, though. He loves playing with toys - he will often play fetch with himself - throwing the toy into the air to chase it without needing anyone to throw it for him.

He would love a quieter home as he will probably take a little time to get acclimated to the new surroundings. Once he’s made himself at home, he’s going to be the most fun dog you can imagine! Come meet this sweet guy today!

Reese and all other dogs over 40 pounds can be adopted at no charge during Pasadena Humane’s Big Dog Summer adoption event, happening 7/11 - 7/25.

The normal adoption fee for dogs is $150.
