The Monrovia City Council has come out in opposition to Proposition 57, which the city says would allow dangerous criminals to be released early. The argument against the measure is that while the proposition says it does not apply to "violent" criminals, it does not define "violent," and thus would rely on the California Penal Code for the definition. But a number of crimes that most people would consider violent, such as assault with a deadly weapon, are classified by the penal code as "serious," and so those convicted of these "serious" crimes would be eligible for early release.
