Two Ball-Drops Tonight in Monrovia
The midnight New Year ball drop on Myrtle tonight isn't the only ball drop in town. According to Councilman Tom Adams, the house at 750 Crescent Drive (a block north of Hillcrest just west of El Nido and the house that won the best-decorated K-Rail award) will also have a ball drop.

~ Monrovia Police report that this morning at 8 a.m., the U.S. Air Force F-16 Thunderbirds will conduct a pre-parade practice flight. I've noticed they often overshoot and come over Monrovia. You might keep an eye out. UPDATE: Yup! About six fighters. I kept my eye out but they surprised me while I was eating a bagel and instead of getting a picture of airplanes I got five beautiful pictures of blue sky. Hey! Lunch at BigShrimps
Had lunch at BigShrimps, on Colorado just east of Myrtle. I figured I ought to check it out since it has changed its ownership and its menu. There seems to be more of an emphasis on shrimp and they've replaced some of the booths with tables. I got the El Diablo shrimp ($12.95) and a soft drink ($1.75). Plus tax. Six nice fat shrimp. Very tasty.

Panera Bread Donates to Community Food Projects
Panera Bread (Monrovia now has one) reports that its Southern California bakery-cafes are giving to their communities this holiday season through a variety of local fundraising and volunteer events. In September, the cafes raised more than $9,000 for local food banks.
Panera will also be teaming up with the Foothill Unity Center, Monrovia's food bank and community crisis center, by dedicating to the Center all customer donations made to its Community Breadbox program at the new Monrovia location.

Lunch at the new Chipotle on Huntington Drive. There was a line almost 20 long. Got a barbacoa (braised and shredded beef) burrito ($6.70) and an iced tea ($1.60). I took a couple bites so you can see the inside. Excellent! Fresh and delicious.

Monrovia Police: Parent Gives Son Counterfeit Money; Argument Over Business Turns Violent; Etc.

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 366 service events, resulting in 72 investigations.
Warrants – Suspect Arrested
December 16 at 8:20 p.m., an officer on patrol observed a male subject he recognized and knew had outstanding warrants for his arrest. The subject was walking through a rear alley behind a business in the 600 block of West Huntington. A computer check confirmed the male had three drug warrants for his arrest. The male was stopped and arrested for the warrants.
Warrant – Suspect Arrested
December 17 at 12:40 a.m., police dispatch received a call reporting a male subject chasing a female subject in the 700 block of West Foothill. Officers arrived and saw a male subject run north from Foothill to an alley. A resident advised officers of the apartment the subject went into. Officers knocked on the door and eventually located a 16-year-old male hiding inside. He said he ran because he had a warrant for his arrest. A computer check revealed he did have a no-bail felony warrant for grand theft. While searching the area, officers located a stolen Honda Accord in a carport off the alley that had been stolen out of El Monte and had the ignition punched. The owner of the vehicle was notified and retrieved her vehicle. The male was arrested and taken to Eastlake Juvenile Detention Facility pending his court date.
Passing a Counterfeit Bill / Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor – Suspects Arrested
December 17 at 11:40 a.m., a staff member from Monrovia High School called to report a student had passed a fictitious five-dollar bill. An officer arrived and interviewed several students, who admitted they had passed the five-dollar bill, and that they had passed a twenty-dollar bill the previous day. One of the students told the officer that the money was given to them by a parent.
Detectives responded to the School District Office and managed to retrieve the bill that was passed the previous day. The parent was called in and admitted she told her son the bill was fictitious and she said she wanted to teach him a lesson if he was caught with the bill. She also admitted that she had two additional bills at her residence and later retrieved the bills. The students and the parent were subsequently arrested and charged. They were later released on citations to appear in court.

Officers responded and located the female subject. Upon investigation, they learned the female had been in an argument with her husband regarding the family business. The female was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and an emergency protective order was obtained.

Following are the weekend's highlighted issues and events.
Vehicle Burglary
December 12 at 1:33 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported at a business parking lot in the 700 block of East Huntington. The suspects broke a window on the victim's vehicle and took a laptop computer bag containing a small camera and paperwork. The suspects are described as two male Hispanics that were seen leaving the area in a primer black Honda Prelude. The driver is described as heavy set with a shaved head. The second suspect was wearing a Raider's hat, t-shirt and gloves. The investigation is continuing.
Residential Burglary / Grand Theft Auto - Suspect Arrested
December 12 at 12:05 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of East Walnut regarding a residential burglary. One of the three residents had returned home and discovered the suspect's computer hooked up in the house. Another one of the residents recognized the computer as belonging to a neighbor, who had been arrested two days prior for trespassing at the same location. Officers went to the suspect's residence, but he was not at the home.
At 2:40 a.m., Monrovia dispatch received a call from Ventura California Highway Patrol reporting they had a suspect in custody after a pursuit. The suspect was driving a vehicle belonging to one of the victim's of this burglary. The victim was unaware the vehicle had been taken. Over the last several months, the police department has been receiving reports of vandalism to the Colorado Commons parking structure believed to be committed by juveniles who are being left unattended at the Friday Night Street Fair. The suspects have been spraying fire retardants all over the parking lot, in the elevators and on the stairwells.On Friday, December 12, police assigned an officer to extra patrol the location. The officer arrested a juvenile suspect he observed spraying a fire extinguisher in the elevator. The juvenile was taken into custody, charged for the vandalism, and his parents were contacted.
The Monrovia Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that they will be held financially responsible for the vandalism committed by their juvenile children. Police ask that you please supervise your child at the Friday Night Street Fair and do not leave them unattended.
Injury Traffic Collision - Vehicle vs. Bicyclist
December 14 at 11:30 a.m., an officer responded to the area of Colorado and Magnolia regarding a traffic collision involving a bicyclist. Two bicyclists were riding eastbound on Colorado and had stopped for the stop sign. A vehicle heading northbound on Magnolia had also stopped for the stop sign. The driver of the vehicle did not see the bicyclists and as they were crossing the intersection, the driver of the vehicle hit the rear tire of one of them, knocking the bicyclist off the bike. The Bicyclist sustained minor injuries.

December 14 at 4:51 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of South Fifth regarding a vehicle that had come off the 210 Freeway, eastbound, and came to rest on an oak tree by a parking area. The driver and two passengers received minor injuries. The collision was handled by the California Highway Patrol.

December 15 at 3:05 p.m., the mother of a two-year-old girl came into the police lobby to file a report. She and other family members were eating at a restaurant located in the 100 block of West Foothill. Her daughter was with her and needed to use the restroom. The mother took her daughter to the restroom, but found it locked. She told her daughter in a loud voice that she would have to wait so the person in the bathroom might hurry. The door opened up and a male subject exited. The mother then walked her daughter into the restroom, and while there, she noticed an iPhone placed in the trap of the sink, facing the toilet. She looked at the phone's video and clearly saw the male subject who had just exited placing the phone to capture video of anyone using the restroom. The mother took the phone to the police station. An officer contacted the male suspect and he admitted to placing the phone to capture video of the two-year-old girl. Criminal charges will be filed against the suspect.

A vehicle was stopped heading west on Wildrose, waiting for traffic to clear. The driver looked north and then south, not seeing any other traffic, he started the turn without seeing the pedestrian who was crossing the street and struck the pedestrian. The victim, a 62 year old man, received abrasions and was complaining of pain. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

December 12 at 1:33 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported at a business parking lot in the 700 block of East Huntington. The suspects broke a window on the victim's vehicle and took a laptop computer bag containing a small camera and paperwork. The suspects are described as two male Hispanics that were seen leaving the area in a primer black Honda Prelude. The driver is described as heavy set with a shaved head. The second suspect was wearing a Raider's hat, t-shirt and gloves. The investigation is continuing.
Residential Burglary / Grand Theft Auto - Suspect Arrested
December 12 at 12:05 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of East Walnut regarding a residential burglary. One of the three residents had returned home and discovered the suspect's computer hooked up in the house. Another one of the residents recognized the computer as belonging to a neighbor, who had been arrested two days prior for trespassing at the same location. Officers went to the suspect's residence, but he was not at the home.
At 2:40 a.m., Monrovia dispatch received a call from Ventura California Highway Patrol reporting they had a suspect in custody after a pursuit. The suspect was driving a vehicle belonging to one of the victim's of this burglary. The victim was unaware the vehicle had been taken. Christmas Food Distribution | Missing Pet Dog
~ Monrovia's Foothill Unity Center will hold a Christmas food distribution on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. at the Arboretum in Arcadia, for approximately 1,300 low-income families, including more than 1,700 children, who are pre-registered with the center. Each family will take home a family-size food box with a meat and the makings for a traditional dinner. Families with children will also take home bags of unwrapped gifts specifically requested by their kids through the Center's Adopt an Angel program.

If you have driven on the south-side freeway-access road between Magnolia and Myrtle (Evergreen), you may have seen this bunker thingy. A couple of people have asked me what it is.
Well, Planning Division Manager writes that it is "a drainage structure being built to accommodate and infiltrate runoff from the freeway to meet the new storm-water requirements."

At its annual reorganization meeting on Dec. 3, the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees voted in new Board. Trustee Joanne Montgomery, who represents Monrovia and portions of Duarte, will serve as board Vice President.

Tips from Monrovia Police on how to to keep your home safe during the Christmas season:
- Lock all of your doors and windows when you are not home. Leave any exterior lights on if they are not sensor activated.
- Make sure that all side gates are locked and secured.
- If you have an alarm system, activate it, even if you will be away for just a few minutes.
- If you have surveillance cameras affixed to the exterior of your property, make sure you periodically check them to ensure they are working properly.
- Ensure that all of your hedges and or bushes are trimmed from the front of your residence so that your house is not concealed from the street.
- Never leave old newspapers, mail or door leaflets piled up on the front steps of your residence.
- Never leave valuables in plain view from the outside.
- If you have valuables, please secure them in either a safe or safe deposit box at your local bank.
- Always take an active role in getting to know your neighborhood.
- Keep your eyes open to suspicious activity in your neighborhood and always do your part as a good witness. Never attempt to stop a crime; always call 911.

December 9 at 8:55 a.m., a traffic collision was reported at the intersection of Myrtle and Foothill. A mother was pushing her daughter in a stroller south on Myrtle, crossing Foothill, when a vehicle traveling south on Myrtle turned east onto Foothill and struck them. Both were taken to a hospital, the mother for complaint of pain and the daughter for evaluation.
Hazmat Spill
December 9 at 11:13 p.m., police received a call of a possible hazmat spill at a business location in the 100 block of Railroad. Monrovia police officers established a perimeter, while Monrovia fire personnel responded and conducted an assessment of the spill. Approximately 300 employees were evaluated at the scene, with about 100 receiving triage, and 7 were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Trespassing / Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance / Resisting and Delaying a Peace Officer
December 10 at 1:17 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of East Walnut regarding a subject seen going into a residence, which was later determined to be a neighbor's residence. Officers responded and contacted the subject who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. The subject resisted and struggled with officers as they attempted to detain him. The subject was eventually taken into custody. He said he entered the residence while the resident was away to get his computer. The suspect was arrested for the above listed charges.
Minor in Possession of a Broad-tip Marker – Suspect Cited
December 10 at 7:29 p.m., two male juveniles were seen on the top level of a parking structure in the 100 block of West Colorado looking at the walls. Officers arrived, questioned the subjects and discovered they were looking for a place to write graffiti. One of the subjects was in possession of three broad-tip markers. The juveniles were released to their parents. The subject in possession of the markers received a citation to appear in court.

December 11 at 12:30 a.m., a male subject was reported to have fallen asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle with the engine running at a gas station at Myrtle and Evergreen. The vehicle was next to a gas pump with the hose still attached to the vehicle's gas tank. When officers arrived, they discovered the male was heavily intoxicated and was determined to be DUI. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.

Monrovia HazMat Incident Caused by Chemical Reaction
As of now, the HazMat incident has stabilized and all emergency resources have been released.
A manufacturing company (Air Logistics) on Railroad Avenue was batch mixing three chemicals and at some point there was an adverse reaction causing the chemicals to heat up and off gas into the air. The chemicals were never unstable, but were superheated.
The chemicals identified were: Cyclo Aliphathic resin, Boron trifluoride, and Ancamine.
Symptoms from employees who reported feeling ill were chest pains, asthma, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
Monrovia was able to avail itself of many of the local resources in the area including fire mutual aid, Health HazMat and AQMD and it is business as usual here.

Following are the weekend's highlighted issues and events.
Suspicious Package
December 5 at 8:33 a.m., an employee of the Wells Fargo Bank in the 500 block of South Myrtle arrived at the bank and noticed a "stuffed" backpack placed directly in front of the main glass doors. He waited about ten minutes and then called police. Officers arrived, saw the package and began locking down the area. About ten minutes later, an Asian male subject walked up to the officers and told them it was his backpack. The subject was identified and computer checks indicated he was on probation for Arson. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad was called for safety purposes and they x-rayed the backpack - no explosive device was identified. The call was cleared without incident.
Fraud - Suspect Arrested
December 5 at 11:00 a.m., officers contacted a female subject in the police lobby wanting to report she was the victim of fraud. In questioning the female, her story changed and she admitted to withdrawing the money herself, and to being the one who used her credit card at a number of locations. She was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested.
While conducting a property check of her belongings, she was found to have a personal check hidden in her shoe. It turned out to be a stolen check that was unreported. The investigation is continuing.

December 6 at 6:23 a.m., a vehicle trailer was taken from a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain. It was taken sometime between 3:30 p.m. on December 5 and 6:00 a.m. on December 6. The trailer was secured with a chain and lock. The suspect(s) cut the gate lock to enter the business property, hitched up the trailer, and drove off with it.

December 7 at 3:41 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of East Evergreen regarding a residential burglary. The resident left the location at 11:30 a.m. When the resident returned home at 3:30 p.m., they noticed the window on the side door had a hole punched near the handle. It appears the suspect(s) reached in and unlocked the door to gain entry. The master bedroom was ransacked; cash and jewelry was taken. The investigation is continuing.
Driving Under the Influence Traffic Collision - Suspect Arrested
December 7 at 5:21 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of Parker reported a neighbor had just driven into her house. The driver is an elderly female. She was backing up and somehow struck her neighbors house. The driver sustained only a small scratch and was treated by Monrovia Fire Department paramedics. After investigation, the driver was determined to be under the influence and was arrested. A building inspector responded to check the integrity of the house.
Warrant - Suspect Arrested
December 8 at 4:49 p.m., a female subject called police and reported a family member she had just seen at a business in the 700 block of East Huntington that was a reported juvenile runaway. Police obtained a description and located the subject at the business. He was arrested for a no-bail juvenile warrant out of San Bernardino. The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department was contacted and they responded to pick up the male juvenile.

Suspicious Package
December 5 at 8:33 a.m., an employee of the Wells Fargo Bank in the 500 block of South Myrtle arrived at the bank and noticed a "stuffed" backpack placed directly in front of the main glass doors. He waited about ten minutes and then called police. Officers arrived, saw the package and began locking down the area. About ten minutes later, an Asian male subject walked up to the officers and told them it was his backpack. The subject was identified and computer checks indicated he was on probation for Arson. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad was called for safety purposes and they x-rayed the backpack - no explosive device was identified. The call was cleared without incident.
Fraud - Suspect Arrested
December 5 at 11:00 a.m., officers contacted a female subject in the police lobby wanting to report she was the victim of fraud. In questioning the female, her story changed and she admitted to withdrawing the money herself, and to being the one who used her credit card at a number of locations. She was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested.
While conducting a property check of her belongings, she was found to have a personal check hidden in her shoe. It turned out to be a stolen check that was unreported. The investigation is continuing.

Hazardous Waste Spill in Monrovia
The Monrovia Fire Department has issued a Shelter in Place order for all residents and employees in the Railroad Avenue area due to a hazmat spill at 146 Railroad Avenue. HazMat crews are currently on scene to identify the unknown chemical off gassing into the area and treat patients feeling ill.

Monrovia's Eight-Foot-Tall Christmas Flamingos
There is a flock of flamingos on the 300 block of North AltaVista. That's the block just north of Hillcrest. Nancy Matthews writes: "There are 19 up so far and we have another 6 or 7 in production. Lunch at Panera Bread
Lunch at the new Panera Bread in the Huntington Oaks shopping center. Beautiful new facility with lots of breads. Got a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich ($6.29) and an iced tea ($1.99). Plus tax. It was very fresh and nice. Also... I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I got a chocolate chip cookie. I had absolutely no intention to get one but when I placed my order I was told I was "eligible" to get a pastry for 99 cents. Oh, boy! Eligible! Well, I'm wiser now, but anyway, it was a very good cookie.

Monrovia Cookie Exchange for Multiple Sclerosis
Cookie Exchange for Multiple Sclerosis, Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall downstairs at the United Methodist Church of Monrovia, 140 East Palm at the corner of Ivy and Palm Avenues. Use the doors on the West side of the building and go downstairs. Wheelchair access from the alley on the eest end of the building. Friends and family are welcome (men are welcome!).
This is how it works. Each person brings 6 dozen (preferably homemade) cookies. I suggest bringing them in a disposable container. You need to bring another container to take home 5 dozen cookies. The remaining dozen will be packaged at the end of the exchange for a special holiday gift for the people who attend the Multiple Sclerosis Group of the San Gabriel Valley Luncheon the following Monday in Monrovia. If you wish to bake extra cookies especially for MS you may put them in the kitchen at the church the day of the exchange. The MS group is coordinated by Aynn and Tom Freeman for over 38 years. For many people who attend the MS Luncheons this is their only party and the gift of homemade cookies means a lot as many are confined to wheelchairs or due to physical limitations are unable to bake.
Some of the cookies will be distributed to nursing homes and hospitals. We will have complementary beverages. Raffle tickets are for sale $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. All proceeds go to the MS Group. If you would like to donate a raffle prize please bring it with you or drop them of at Janie’s. Please wrap your raffle prizes. Gift baskets and gift cards are also appreciated. If you know someone that has MS and would like to attend the Luncheon please talk to Aynn Freeman. The Luncheons is a great support group.
Last year we had over 4,000 cookies. In order to have enough cookies left for the MS Group I need to have as many people as possible in attendance. Please invite relatives or friends to come with you. If you are not a baker please bring individually wrapped colorful candy, cookies or candy canes. They make a nice addition to the packages. Vehicle Burglary
December 2 at 7:38 a.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 700 block of Bonita. The victim parked her vehicle in front of her residence 5:30 p.m. When she went to her vehicle the next morning, she noticed her driver's door was open. The loss was a pair of shoes, sunglasses and CD case. The investigation is continuing.

December 2 at 7:42 a.m., a vehicle was reported burglarized in the 800 block of West Olive. The victim parked her vehicle in the rear carport area at 9:00 p.m. and returned to her vehicle in the morning at 6:00 a.m. She discovered the front door and trunk open. The loss was a laptop computer. The victim believes she locked her vehicle, but was not sure. The investigation is continuing.
Commercial Burglary
December 2 at 8:09 a.m., dispatch received a call reporting a burglary at a business in the 1800 block of California. The business was closed and locked the day before at 3:00 p.m. When the reporting party arrived at the business at 8:00 a.m., they noticed the lock to the back gate had been cut. The loss was several hundred pounds of steel. The investigation is continuing.
Stolen Vehicle
December 2 at 11:44 a.m., a vehicle was stolen from a business parking lot in the 300 block of West Huntington. The victim parked his vehicle, a white Honda CRV in the lot and entered a store. He returned approximately 30 minutes later and discovered his vehicle was missing. The investigation is continuing.
Commercial Burglary – Suspects Arrested
December 2 at 12:18 p.m., a burglary was reported at a business in the 500 block of West Huntington. Two adult males entered the store; one was wearing a backpack. Both selected merchandise and concealed it in the backpack and then exited the store without paying. Once outside, they were detained by officers and both were arrested.
Indecent Exposure – Suspect Arrested
December 2 at 7:11 p.m., a woman inside the library in the 300 block of South Myrtle saw a male subject sitting in a chair in the adult section of the library, exposing himself. She immediately called the police. Officers responded and the suspect was detained, positively identified and arrested for indecent exposure.
Stolen Vehicle Recovered – Suspect Arrested
December 3 at 11:00 a.m., the victim's son called to report that he saw his mother's stolen vehicle, which was stolen the day before Thanksgiving, in a business parking lot in the 700 block of West Huntington. He claimed he saw two male suspects exit the vehicle and get into a blue Honda that headed west on the 210 Freeway.
An officer responded to the location and found the vehicle parked, but he noticed the hood of the vehicle was not hot. The officer checked with gardeners that were working in the area, and they said they saw the vehicle parked since 8:00 a.m. when they arrived. The officer questioned the mother and suspicion was raised that her son may have stolen the vehicle. Officers questioned the son, who denied taking the vehicle at first, but later admitted to the theft, and said he was under the influence of drugs at the time. He felt it was time to return the vehicle and created the story of seeing the suspects. The son was arrested and taken into custody.
Missing Juvenile Located
December 3 at 3:41 p.m., a 16-year-old male juvenile was reported missing to police by his father. The father dropped his son off at high school in the 800 block of West Colorado in the morning. On his way to pick him up after school, the father received a text message from the son stating that he no longer wanted to be a burden. The father arrived at the school, but his son was not at the designated location. He checked the school with school staff and then went home to check there, but did not find his son. He then went to the police department. Officers began an investigation and conducted an area check, but the subject was not located.
Later that evening, the missing juvenile called his father and said he was ready to come home. When the father asked him where he was, the son told him he was on the sidewalk across the street from their house. The son was located outside by his father.

Suspicious Package Leads to Evacuation of Some Buildings in Old Town Monrovia
Jennifer Stone reports on Facebook that a suspicious package was left in front of the Wells Fargo bank in Old Town, resulting in the temporary evacuation of several nearby buildings. Facebook folks say all clear now.

Preview Lunch at Monrovia's New Smashburger
Had a free preview lunch at the new Smashburger in Monrovia, at the old Acapulco restaurant site on Huntington. It opens to the public tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 6. Why "smash?" Because they smash a fresh - not frozen - ball of beef, or piece of chicken, on the grill. We got a sampler menu, which included fried pickle slices. Never had those. Everything tastes better when it's free, but really, everything was very, very tasty! I think I liked the truffle mushroom burger (shown here) best, but the BBQ bacon burger was mighty good. Even the veggie spicy black bean burger was very good, and I'm not a vegetarian. If you prefer chicken, try the avocado club sandwich. Great shakes, too! Former City Councilman Joe Garcia, who helped bring Smashburger to town, showed up as well.

Gold Line Bridge Getting Another Award

Watch Out for the Utility Bill Scam!
Southern California Edison is warning customers against scammers who demand immediate payment on past due utility bills.
"SCE will never call a customer to collect or demand money for past due bills," according to SCE's Consumer Affairs Manager Marlyn Denter.
Tips:
- Ask for the person's name and call back number, a supervisor's name, how much money they are requesting, and the method of payment.
- Check the area code of the number you are getting a call from. If it is not an 800 number, the call is fraudulent.
- Call SCE directly at 1-800-655-4555 to ask about your bill.
- Contact local authorities if you suspect the phone call is fraud.

Monrovia Rotary Club Providing Clothing for Needy Children
The Rotary Club of Monrovia will once again be helping out local children in need for the holiday season. On December 7th, 50 disadvantaged children identified by Santa Anita Family Services will get a special treat this holiday season. Through the assistance of the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Kohl's and Wells Fargo, the 50 students will get the opportunity to shop for new clothing and shoes. Each child will be paired with a Monrovia High School Interact Club member, adult Rotarian, or adult Wells Fargo staff member to assist with their shopping and will be able to purchase $125 worth of school appropriate clothing.
This is the second year that the Rotary Club of Monrovia has offered the Santa Clothes project to less fortunate children in the Monrovia area. Last year the program was able to assist 30 children with $120 each and we are very happy to be able to extend the benefit to 50 children this year at $125 each. Monrovia Rotarian Karen Lujan stated "I was personally able to assist two children last year to pick out clothes and shoes and it was one of the most rewarding things I haven done all year. The parents were so appreciative of the program and the kids faces beamed as they showed us all their purchases (some even wearing them out of the store)."
Tax deductible donations (501(c)3 EID: 51-0656409) are being accepted online for the Santa Clothes project to help fund more children at http://www.monroviarotaryclub.com/donations/. This is the second year that the Rotary Club of Monrovia has offered the Santa Clothes project to less fortunate children in the Monrovia area. Last year the program was able to assist 30 children with $120 each and we are very happy to be able to extend the benefit to 50 children this year at $125 each. Monrovia Rotarian Karen Lujan stated "I was personally able to assist two children last year to pick out clothes and shoes and it was one of the most rewarding things I haven done all year. The parents were so appreciative of the program and the kids faces beamed as they showed us all their purchases (some even wearing them out of the store)."

Santa's Monrovia Schedule
This year, Monrovia will continue our tradition of celebrating the Christmas season by touring Santa Claus around city streets on top of a fire engine. Escorted by a police car and a decorated public works sleigh, Santa will provide candy canes to the public. City employees will, again, volunteer their time to help make the program fun and successful.
Last year's event was a great success! This year's Santa Tour will be another exciting and fun time for members of our community when they see Santa visiting their neighborhoods. Everyone is encouraged to come out and wave to Santa.
Monday, December 16, 2013 - will tour city streets south of Huntington, west of Myrtle to Fifth, north of southern city boundaries.
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - will tour city streets east of Myrtle, north of Foothill.

The fire engine will be driven by volunteer firefighters, who will follow the police car. Santa will ride on top of the fire engine with spotlights shining on him as he wishes everyone a merry Christmas. The fire engine will be decorated with hundreds of Christmas lights.
The public works truck will be driven by volunteer public works employees. Our reindeer sleigh, bright with over 1500 Christmas lights, will play Christmas carols. Community members are welcome to ride with city employees and their families on back of the truck and trailer during the tour. Space is limited and participation is first come first served. Parents are reminded that children must be accompanied by an adult.

Monrovia's Foothill Unity Center Distributes Food for Holidays
Clients took home holiday food boxes sized by number of people in the family, with meat and the makings for a festive holiday dinner. Over 800 volunteers worked on the program, from planning and preparation to final cleanup. Each client cart was personally escorted through the distribution by a personal volunteer. All participants received Thanksgiving cards handmade by local school children. 300 turkeys were donated, trucked in and distributed by California American Water Company, while representatives of PCL Construction were on hand to present a $5,000 check.
Less than a month after this event, families will receive festive food boxes again at the annual Holiday Distribution on Saturday, December 21, and Monday, December 23. At the Arboretum event on Saturday, reserved for families with children, each family will also take home an opaque bag pre-packed with new toys and clothing for each child. The presents are donated through the Center’s Angels program, which invites individuals and groups to adopt paper angels hand-decorated by community volunteers of all ages. Written on each angel is one child’s gift wishes.
“We don’t give the presents to the children,” says Center Executive Director Betty McWilliams. “Gifts for each family’s youngsters are gathered in an opaque bag that’s given to the parents so they can wrap and give them as part of their own holiday traditions.” At the event, children will also enjoy fun activities and a chance to share their wishes with Santa.
77% of the Center’s clients are at or below the National Poverty Level. “The holidays are an especially difficult time for families who fight hunger every day,” says Center Executive Director Betty McWilliams. “The difficult economy and cuts in the CalFresh food stamp program are swelling the ranks of local people who need help to feed their families. Community support is more vital than ever — both to help them and to let them know their neighbors care.”
The Center is seeking donations of food, funds and volunteer time for the Holiday Distribution. Funds may be donated securely online at foothillunitycenter.org. Food and checks may be dropped off weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at either Center location: 415 W. Chestnut Ave. in Monrovia or 191 N. Oak Ave. in Pasadena. Monrovia Police: Gallant Man Pushed Through Window; Fight, Snooze, Fight; Drugs, Etc.

Following are the weekend’s highlighted issues and events.
Child Abuse – Suspect Arrested
November 27 at 7:56 p.m., a 15-year-old female subject ran into the police department lobby with visible injuries. She told officers her father assaulted her with his fists. She said she ran from her house to get away from him. The mother was not home at the time of the assault. Paramedics were called to the station to treat the victim for her injuries. Officers were dispatched to the residence in the 200 block of East Olive, where they detained and arrested the father for felony child abuse. The victim was later released to her mother.
Battery with Serious Bodily Injury – Suspect Arrested
November 27 at 10:47 p.m., dispatch received several calls reporting two male subjects fighting in front of a restaurant in the 100 block of East Lemon. The subjects had crashed through the restaurant's plate glass window. When officers arrived, one of the subjects had fled on foot to the rear area of the restaurant. Both subjects were detained and treated by paramedics for lacerations from the glass.
The investigation revealed that one of the male subjects had been drinking and was making inappropriate comments to a female subject. He grabbed her and began punching her. The second male subject jumped in to protect the female and was pushed backwards through the plate glass window, causing severe injuries to his back and legs. The male suspect who started the fight was arrest for felony assault with great bodily injury.
Burglary – Suspect Arrested
November 27 at 11:50 p.m., a business in the 100 block of East Pomona called to report the alarm to their stored vehicle lot was going off and they saw a suspect on the property. When officers arrived, a suspect started running west on Pomona towards Myrtle. Officers detained the suspect and recovered a car stereo he had discarded in front of the business. The employees positively identified the suspect and confirmed the stereo was stolen from one of their vehicles. The suspect was arrested.
Grand Theft Auto
November 29 at 9:20 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of Encino Way called police to report his vehicle had been stolen. He had parked his 2007 Honda Accord in front of his residence at 11:30 p.m. When he returned to his vehicle the following morning, he discovered it missing. The investigation is continuing.
Domestic Violence / False Imprisonment – Suspect Arrested
November 29 at 10:45 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of West Lemon regarding a domestic violence incident. A male and female subject that live together were arguing and the male subject had been drinking. The female tried to slap the male subject, but he grabbed her and struck her twice in the face with a clenched fist. The female tried to call the police with her cell phone, but the male subject grabbed her phone and smashed it. She tried to leave the room, but he covered her mouth to prevent her from calling out for help. They both fell asleep on the bed. She woke up later and left the location.
The female subject returned a few hours later to retrieve some property. She tried to grab the male subject’s cell phone since her phone was broken, but he grabbed her and struck her with his elbow in the face several times. She managed to get away again and went to the police department to report the incident. The boyfriend was interviewed at the residence and was arrested. An Emergency Protective Order was granted.

November 29 at 5:47 p.m., dispatch received a call from a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding a stolen vehicle. An employee came to work that morning and parked his 1995 Acura in the parking lot. He returned to the area where he parked his vehicle eight hours later and discovered it was missing. The investigation is continuing.
Stolen Vehicle Recovered
November 29 at 6:05 p.m., while officers where investigating the vehicle theft in the above incident, they located a stolen vehicle in the same parking lot. The vehicle is a 1996 Acura that was stolen out of the Los Angeles Police Department jurisdiction. The investigation is continuing.
Under the Influence of Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested
November 30 at 1:45 a.m., an officer contacted a male subject pushing a bicycle north on Myrtle. The subject was noticeably nervous and out of breath. Through investigation, the officer determined the subject was under the influence of a controlled substance. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.
Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested
December 1 at 12:55 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Huntington regarding a suspicious person loitering in a parking lot. They arrived and contacted the subject, who was walking around the parking lot carrying a backpack. The officer conducted a consent search of the subject’s backpack and found a small baggie containing methamphetamine and five used hypodermic syringes. The subject was arrested and taken into custody for the above listed charges.
Vehicle Burglary
December 1 at 7:08 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. The victim had parked and secured her vehicle in the parking at approximately 5:30 a.m., leaving her purse in the back seat. An unknown suspect smashed the victim's right rear passenger window and took her purse containing cash, a camera, and other miscellaneous items. The investigation is continuing.

Panera Bread Opens in Monrovia Today
Panera Bread, at the old Acapulco site on Huntington, opens in Monrovia today, and the first 25 guests to visit each day from December 2-4 will receive a stainless steel Panera Bread coffee mug and a voucher for free coffee for a week.
As part of the bakery-cafe’s ongoing fundraising efforts, all donations from the location’s Community Breadbox™ and Day-End Dough-Nation™ programs will go to the Foothill Unity Center, Monrovia’s local food bank and crisis center for those struggling within the community.
The new bakery-cafe will include menu favorites like the Breakfast Power Sandwich and Fuji Apple Chicken Salad, as well as new offerings like the Fontina Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Chicken Tortellini Alfredo Pasta and will be open to the public on Monday, December 2nd.
