I saw School Board President Ed Gililland at the Monrovia Parade, and he had two interesting things to say:
~ As a mariachi band went past during the parade, it reminded him that he wants to get a student mariachi band going at Monrovia High School.
~ Perhaps you recall ( http://goo.gl/hu6TF ) that the Monrovia School District did not meet its goal of increasing student attendance (which means more money from the state). One reason, according to Gilliland, is that there was an outbreak of head lice at one school and students had to stay home.

This is certainly a nice idea but I'm just wondering if Mr. Gilliland is aware that there are already 4 musical ensembles at the High School - Jazz Band, Drum Line, Marching Band, and Symphonic Band, as well as guitar classes. In the near future there will be an Orchestra. All of these classes are taught by the director of bands Mr. Magallanes. Perhaps at the present time Mr. Gilliland could focus on the currently existing ensembles and work to assist the MHS Band Boosters effort to provide the much needed financial support for these current programs, as well as sending the Symphonic Band to Carnegie Hall in February 2012.
